Electronic Press Kit – EPK
An EPK (Electronic Press Kit) is a page, website, or digital file used to promote your music. “It allows you to provide your essential information to industry professionals – music bookers, venues, journalists, bloggers, playlist curators, labels, managers, radio programmers, etc” (Malkin, T. 2026). An EPK is a crucial item for a musician in the creative industries to have as it in short, is a ‘music CV’. It is used to obtain gigs, jobs, or even when joining a band. My EPK’s main purpose is to promote myself as a musician, songwriter, producer, and to support myself in creating a professional image. My targeted audience consists of promoters, event organisers, and fans. I decided to include a bio in my EPK as despite it making myself look more professional, it also presents the opportunity to engage with my targeted audience, sanctioning my ability to present myself as a songwriter, musician, and producer. The bio is decisively written in third person as this allows me to secure some distance from the readers, creating the chance to sell myself impartially for any promoters or event organisers reading. Writing in first person when being professional within this specific context is also “too casual and informal” (D’Aurora, E. 2023). I decided to make my EPK dominantly consist of the colors white and black, especially on my first page. I do this to reflect my artistic identity as despite I am selling myself as a multi-instrumentalist, genre-crossing artist, my work will be classic rock, and metal dominated to which I mention during the EPK. In the future, as I gain more of an audience, I will look at setting a certain aesthetic color scheme to match my brand, which will be reflected upon updating my EPK and changing my current colors to the specific chosen. It is vital to summarise your abilities and creativity within an EPK as “it’s a digital resume that offers your target audience a 360 view of what you’re all about” (Awbi, A. 2019). I strategically decided to add links to my professional social media accounts such as Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, and TikTok as these would help gain publicity due to the fact of them all reaching above 100 million active daily users (Singh, 2026; Kumar, 2026). This makes social media play a vital role when creating an audience, fanbase, and gaining popularity for your creativity. I decided my make my EPK a website due to taking inspiration from some of my personal favourite bands such as ‘The Killers’, and ‘The Warning’, both of which have their professional EPK’s incorporated within their websites. I found this not only made myself look more organised as a musician, but also pointed people towards more than just my EPK, such as to my music, and allows for viewers to be directed to events and one day possibly even merchandise. Platforms such as Facebook, TikTok, and Instagram, alongside streaming platforms “such as Spotify and Apple music have overhauled music marketing, and the way artists look to enhance audience engagement” (SAE. 2022). Whilst others believe despite having these platforms, an EPK remains a higher quality “way to demonstrate your professionalism and commitment to success, two characteristics that everyone from talent buyers to music managers look for in an act”. (Soundcharts. 2023). I personally believe it is a mixture of which make success for a musician most probable. This is because streaming platforms are most likely to gain a big audience quicker, yet an EPK is an essential, and more professional way to sell yourself in the creative industry to people such as labels or talent buyers. My target audience ranges from a mix of 80’s rock and metal lovers, to others who enjoy a calmer setting with pop-folk music. The study ‘Exploring age-specific preferences in listening’ published by Paul Lamere (2014) suggests the typical age range for a listener of 80’s rock would be between 35-54, naming classic bands such as Bon Jovi, Guns N’ Roses, and Queen. However, the study also implies the typical age range for a pop-folk lover would be between the ages of 25-44, mentioning bands such as The Lumineers, Mumford and Sons, and Of Monsters and Men.

The rock side of my targeted audience would typically “be the type who enjoys going to concerts and other music based social events” (Fox, E. 2017) This side of my audience is also most likely to be dominated with people who “own their own instruments and have their own band”. Whilst the pop-folk side of my audience would typically be “more likely to attend live shows, more willing to buy physical media, and more engaged with the artists they follow” (orphiq. 2026). My EPK follows a generic aesthetic yet maintains to blend the two styles of rock and folk into one, ensuring it appeals to both audiences. To do this I took inspiration from some of my personal favourite bands and their websites/EPK, s such as The Warning, and Of Monsters and Men. I started by looking for similarities to which I came across the matter of them both being websites. I then found the two prioritise the use of the colors black and white as it gives a professional, calm, yet intimidating look depending on how you view them. An “EPK is your professional resume and business card that makes it easy for music industry professionals such as managers, booking agents, venues, promoters, journalists, and more, to access and review your work” (Apple Music for Artists. 2026). It can support a musician financially as it is the professional, and main reason as to how an artist can get a gig, point fans in the way of their merch, help people discover what you’re about by directing them to your music, and even helps reviewers and journalists write about you with ease if quotes are included- doing the journalists job for them. It is important to commercially target my audience with my EPK as it would not only make it obvious to people viewing for the first-time what style of artist I am, but is also a great way to differentiate myself from others, making me stand out. This is a great opportunity as “It enables your music to be heard, seen and branded correctly to connect with the correct audience” (Grome, J. 2023).Despite branding for two different styles (rock and folk) is unusual and would typically make it difficult to see what my certain ‘style’ is, I tackled this challenge by incorporating the main commonly found elements of both styles within my EPK. Ensuring my target audience will feel familiar with the style, regardless of what genre they’re coming from. I have a very limited number of photos, videos, and no fully published songs in which I can encrypt into my EPK yet. Despite this does make it look less professional, the longer my music career progresses, the more I will continue to advance and update my EPK with. For instance, the few photos I do have are nowhere near as professional as I would like, however for a future event, I can hire out a photographer. A photographer’s hourly rate for an event would typically consist of $150 (bark. 2026). When working with my peers, analysing and giving each other advice and opinions on our EPK’s, despite what stage we were all individually at. I received advice from someone who already had most of their EPK finished which was to come up with three creative and descriptive words, and to ensure they are one of the first things my viewers see. I had taken this into account and so the words “Masterful, versatile, and promising” are all visible the second a viewer scrolls on my website. In this session, the group and I were also reviewing other professional EPK’s, we concluded that most prioritise a few colors in which are the main aesthetic look for that certain band/artist such as the EPK for the band GUN, utilises the colors red, white, and yellow. When I formulated the idea of prioritising the colors black and white, then explained how my EPK needs to target the audience of both rock and folk, they all agreed that was a good way to start my aesthetic look. We discussed what an EPK is meant to do, and how to do so efficiently such as not only the ‘look’ matters, but also other aspects such as the bio. I showed what I was originally planning for my written bio, however my peers advised me on splitting one big paragraph into few smaller ones as this would seem less frightening towards the viewers. I was then advised if I do so, then to structure these paragraphs well. For example, I should use the first small paragraph to ‘set the scene’ such as talking about who you are, what you do, and where you’re from. The second paragraph should be concise of your inspirations, to bring the audience to a deeper connection with you and to let them know you might share similar music as one of their favourite artists. Finally, to then finish the bio with the last paragraph mentioning why you’d be right for the audience, mentioning points such as how you’ve progressed, and what you’re now doing, and why this would be enjoyable for the reader.
