Working in the creative industries

by

Introduction

I’m going to be talking and researching about being a music producer within the music industry. I will be looking at what a music producer does creatively and practically, the skills they will need as well as qualifications are required to be a music producer and any legal issues that they may encounter within their job and how they can develop their professional skills to give them more even more opportunities with their job.

What is a music producer and what skills do they need?

A music producer supports musicians and artist by being in charge of recording their music, assist with songwriting also help get them signed to record labels, scheduling recording sessions making sure they use this time efficiently while helping them with the overall song/album they may be recoding. Some producers can also take the raw material of the recoding to make a rough mix/master off it so when it is pasted to the mixing and mastering engineers, they have a rough idea of how the artist what their music to sound and also make most of the creative mixing decisions before it is mixed professionally.

To be a music producer you need to be good at communicating and collaborating with other musicians as music producers work with many people such as musicians, record labels, artist mangers, publishers, songwriters and mixing and mastering engineers. Knowing how to use a digital audio workstation or a DAW is necessary to be a music producer as you would be in charge of recording the band and putting together a rough or sometimes the final mix.

Music Producers can also work within the band they are working with and can also be the bands mixer and master engineer. Music Producers usually work with several musicians and artists but sometimes they can find themselves just working with one artist. And sometimes artists can act as their own producer an example of an artist who has acted as their own producer is Elliot Smith who self produced some of his own albums as well as working with other produces some of his other works while still having a large hand in his own production. Elliot smith also mixed many of his own songs.

Having the skill to promote yourself as a producer is useful as you will need to be able to get yourself out there and for musicians and artist to notice and come to you to get work. Starting to work with small local bands in your area is a good way to start getting experience by helping them and building yourself a portfolio of projects you have worked on for others to see so that they may hire you getting noticed by bigger artists who will bring in more exposure for your work and help your work reach more artists to turn more of profit.

Another good way of promoting yourself is using social media as that used by a lot of modern people in the music industry and is a good way to reach a large audience of potential clients, you can even create your own website for anyone to access and view your work so they can see if you would be a fit for them. Or use short form content like Instagram reels or TikTok to share your work and get it to an audience who might not have seen your work otherwise.

A music producer also needs knowledge of audio and recoding techniques like microphone placements and how the will affect the recording and how to record certain instruments like big differences between recording guitar or vocals or a full drum kit. Producers also need to know what microphones to use and all other technological differences like what types of leads to use and how to set up the studio. Producers will need to know how the space they record in will affect the audio quality and how to make recordings sound more professional or give the recordings the sound that the artists imagine in their head. They also need to know how instruments are set up like how to set up drums. They also need to know what effects to use on certain instruments and how those effects work like compression, reverb or saturation for example.

A music producer realises full potential of musicians and artis and they get them there.

What legal and financial issues music producers may face?

Legal issues Music producers may face is arguments over copyright material this can be with the band they’re working with or this could be because the song they have created sounds similar to another musicians song, this can then lead to financial issues with who gets what percentage of the royalties as people in the band may feel they did more work so they should earn more of the royalties or if it sounds like another artist song they may feel that they need to be given some percentage of the royalties for that song as they came with the musical idea for part of that song first There isn’t much that can be done about this as if it is proven the another artist has used the musical idea the band you are working with have used then you will have to pay them a percentage of your royalties.

Ways to avoid legal issues and financial issues within the band you’re working with is to create a contract with one another before you start the project, you’ll be working on in which everybody will agree on the contract. Then if anyone in the band starts to have an issue after the project the contract can be brought back up and reviewed by everyone to see what they all agreed on. Then this can be used to iron out any arguments at the end of the project as legally everybody agreed to what they would get out of the project beforehand so nobody can argue what’s in the contract as it was Signed and agreed on.

A contract should always be used when you start a new project with a band as this can protect the music producer from any legal and financial issues with the band in the future.

What qualifications are needed for music producer profession?

To be music producer you don’t necessarily need a degree in the specific field although having a degree in music production is very useful and will help you with your profession as when people are looking to hire a music producer and they see that you have a qualification within that profession they will know that you have the skills required and knowledge required whereas if you don’t have one potential clients have no guarantee that you have the skills and knowledge needed to produce their work.

Getting a degree in music production is a useful choice for a career as a music producer as you will be working closely with other musicians and people who want to work within the creative industry so it will be easier for you to gain connections with other people within the creating as you are on a degree course with them, they can give your name out to other connections they make getting you more work and getting your name out there more and you can also so  work with The people you meet on your degree to get your work life and future career as a music producer working within the creative industry.

If you were not to go to university and get a degree within music production then you would need to learn and develop the production skills and knowledge yourself, you will need to be able to promote yourself get connections  with other musicians and other people in the creative industry by yourself. Or you could even start an apprenticeship somewhere the offers a music producer/production course to gain those skills and knowledge needed and also gain connections there Which is another option for if you want to be a music producer and don’t want to go to university to get a degree in it. Knowing how to use a digital audio workstation is also needed for you to be a music producer this can be taught in colleges and universities which is useful as they will provide these digital audio workspaces for you and many colleges and universities teach more than one which is useful as different places you could be working could use different digital audio workspaces but this can also be self-taught using tools online and within an apprenticeship if they offer it.

Having at least a basic understanding of music theory is also very important for a music producer to have as producers can sometimes assist artists with songwriting and an understanding of music theory techniques like melody, harmony and rhythm can help a producer develop the potential of artists songs and songwriting by adding further more developed theory knowledge. Most academic institutions that do music production courses offer some sort of music theory support as it is highly important to being a music producer as it can help greatly with knowing what artists are doing.

What career development and opportunities are available within this profession?

A music producer can develop their career In many different ways. One way can be getting recruited as a house producer at a record label and work with signed artists at that record label. This means that as a signed record producer you wont have to go looking for artists to work with yourself as the record label will set you up with artists to work with which makes that part easier. On the other hand as an independent producer you can make your own decisions and choose what artists you work with and have more control over what you do with your career.

Another career development path a music producer can take is to work on more mixing and mastering projects and developing there mixing and mastering skills so they can also take control of the mixing and mastering of their projects rather than just doing just a rough mix and having the professional mix done by separate mixing and mastering engineers. This can make a producer more desirable as they can do more work on the project and it also means the producer can charge a higher rate. They could also branch off and be a separate mixing and mastering engineer for other projects to bring in even further income separate from producing work.

A very useful career development path for a music producer is gaining more music theory knowledge. Having greater music theory knowledge is crucial to being able to add to the music of artists who a producer is working with as knowing basic principles such as melody, harmony and rhythm a music producer can assist artists with songwriting and further realise their full potential. Knowing further music theory like being able to write and read sheet music can also be incredibly useful for a music producer as they can transcribe the artists music down and write down ideas to work with classically trained musicians. This can also lead to the producer taking more of  role in arrangements for session musicians that could be playing on artists work. An example of a producer who also worked as an arranger is George Martin the producer for The Beatles who wrote most of the orchestral and string arrangements for Beatles songs such as Strawberry Fields Forever and A Day In The Life which wouldn’t have the same grandness from the orchestral elements arranged by their producer.

Conclusion

Overall a music producer is a rewarding career path as you get to work with a very diverse range of people within the creative industry and get to realise many artists full potential and built a portfolio of work and having many artists who are willing to work with you over and over again as they are comfortable working with you as their desired producer.
