WITCI Supporting Commentary
In my electronic press kit (EPK) I aimed to create a simple, professional and accessible resource that represents everything that Clit Spit is about musically, politically and personally. I chose the content to make sure that anyone reviewing the EPK (promoter, booking agent, venue, recording label, etc.) would get an immediate and accurate understanding of who we are, what we sound like, and what we stand for.
Our electronic press kit opens with a short band bio that outlines the core identity of Clit Spit. It touches on our musical influences, our roots in the punk scene, and our commitment to intersectional feminism. This bio sets the tone for everything else in the EPK and gives context to our sound and message.
To give an idea of our sound I included a link to one of our recorded demos. While we play best when we can feel the energy of the audience, having a recorded track makes it easier for listeners to understand our style, tone, and lyrical themes. It also gives potential collaborators or industry professionals a chance to hear what we’re capable of in terms of songwriting and recording, even if it’s raw or DIY in production.
I also included promotional posters for our upcoming gigs and a list of a few dates we will be playing on soon. This provides a snapshot of our current activity level and momentum. It shows that we are active, in demand, and serious about performing regularly. The posters themselves are a part of our visual identity and add an extra layer to how we present ourselves.
To build more of an understanding of our activity level, I added a few quotes from audience members and fans who’ve seen us live. These quotes give an outside perspective on what people can expect from a Clit Spit show, high energy and raw emotion.
A stage plot is also included, along with technical requirements and details about each band member. I decided to add this because it will make it easier for promoters or venues to plan gigs and makes for smoother communication with sound engineers. Finally, I included basic information like the names of all current members, where we’re based and clear contact details.
I chose to focus on Clit Spit for this assignment because out of all the projects i am in i feel like it is the most developed and successful. Over time Clit Spit has become more than just a casual band or side project for me, is has become a serious musical and political expression for all of us involved. For me, it made most sense to use this assignment as an opportunity to invest in that progress and take the band to the next stage.
Clit Spit has already achieved a fair amount without the kind of industry facing tools that many bands rely on, such as a professional electronic press kit. We’ve played gigs in various cities like London, Manchester and Sheffield in venues special to the punk scene like The Windmill in Brixton, The Peer Hat in Manchester and AATMA in Manchester. Through playing these gigs, we have built a local following of likeminded individuals who resonate with our feminist ethos and high energy performances. That said, i believe in order to grow further as a band, whether that means playing bigger shows, getting on the radar of promoters that aren’t in our immediate network or getting record label support, we need to present ourselves with the same level of professionalism that we bring to our live shows.
Creating an electronic press kit felt like the most logical next step in this process. It’s a tool designed specifically to bridge the gap between artists and the wider music industry and helps us give a clear image of who we are to promoters, venues, and record labels. For a band like Clit Spit where our message is just as important as our music we want to be taken seriously, not just as a punk band but as artists with a purpose.
This electronic press kit gives us an opportunity to put everything into one professional package. Our bio, demo recordings, gig history, audience feedback, visuals, and details like stage plot and contact details. My hope is that by creating a strong, informative and engaging press kit, Clit Spit will be in a much better position to access higher quality opportunities. This hopefully means securing better gigs, more thoughtfully curated lineups, and more respected venues.
This electronic press kit is a part of a broader strategy to position Clit Spit more visibly and professionally within the wider music industry without compromising our own identity. We’re not interested in commercial success for its own sake, but we are interested in gaining access to platforms that will allow us to amplify our message, connect with more diverse audiences and be a part of spaces that may not have previously made room for voices like ours. Whether that’s through national touring, curated political line ups or being featured in alternative press outlets, we want Clit Spit to be visible and intentional.
Creating the electronic press kit for Clit Spit wasn’t just a straightforward process of gathering materials, it came with its own set of challenges and learning moments that made the final project stronger. As someone deeply involved in the band, it was strange at first to take a step back and look at Clit Spit from the outside. This meant shifting from the mindset of a performer and collaborator to someone presenting everything the band has. It showed me our strengths but also some gaps we hadn’t acknowledged yet.
One of the first challenges was deciding what needed to go in the EPK and what didn’t. Because Clit Spit is a politically driven project with a lot of emotion and personal investment behind it, it was hard not to include every poster, demo recording and gig that we have played. The electronic press kit had to be quickly accessible to someone who might just spend a few minutes looking at it.
There were also internal discussions about tone and presentation. We wanted to be taken seriously, but we didn’t want to polish ourselves to the point of losing the rawness that defines our sound. This led to valuable conversations within the band about how to balance being approachable but unapologetic. We didn’t want to soften or sanitize our message to make it more industry friendly, but we also didn’t want to alienate people who might genuinely be interested in supporting us.
The process of crafting this electronic press kit has also allowed room for me to self-reflect and encouraged a change in perspective as I had to think about the needs of the band from a position without the band. I had to consider our dynamics with each other and how we interact with the wider political and social world around us. These were things like what do people see first? How might our political views be perceived? Which impressions stick? These questions were not only crucial to the creation and understanding of our EPK, but also to understanding how we present and position ourselves as a band.
This electronic press kit gives us a chance to bring everything together in one professional, accessible package. It’s something we can send out quickly and confidently, knowing it reflects what we are and what we stand for as a band. In the future it will stick with us as we update it with new recordings, visuals, gig history, audience feedback and all the practical info like our stage plot and contact details.
In conclusion, the creation of this electronic press kit has been a pivotal step for both myself and for Clit Spit as a band. It represents more than just a collection of promotional materials, it’s our identity, values, sound, and ambition. Through this process I’ve developed a stronger understanding of how we present ourselves to the outside world and I’ve learnt to think more strategically about the future of the band. This project forced me to balance creativity with authenticity and professionalism. By carefully selecting each element of the electronic press kit, from the demo recordings to the posters, quotes and stage plot, I created something that doesn’t just inform but resonates. It was an opportunity to clarify our purpose, align our presentation with our values, and move forward.
