1. Project Overview
Introduction
A Day in the Life of a Football Coach is a collaboration between me and Max, the owner of Max Football Company. The documentary follows a typical day in Max’s life, showing his routine from start to finish. It combines professional-style interviews, cinematic footage, and a range of music to highlight different emotions and enhance the story.
My aim was to create a professional-quality documentary using a range of references and inspirations to achieve a high standard in both audio and visual production. The collaboration was successful through strong communication, teamwork, trust, and respect.
My artistic goal was to explore the life of a football coach through authentic storytelling, focusing on teamwork, pressure, passion, and real-life experiences. My technical goal was to improve my filming, audio recording, and production skills. My management goal was to organise the project effectively through clear communication, scheduling, and teamwork.
This project involved only me and Max. I managed the project from start to finish, including filming, recording, editing, and time management, while Max was the main subject and provided the story behind the documentary.
Me (Naphat Nititanakan)- Producer/Director:

My collaborator, Max, is a final-year Sport Management student at Leeds Beckett University who works as a private professional football coach for young children, and he is the main subject and lead participant of this documentary.

4. Evidence of Planning/Process
Project Management
According to Phase management process which includes :
- Project Initiation
- Project Planning
- Project Execution
- Project Monitoring and Control
- Project Closure
This section shows the process of my final project from start to finish. I used the five project management processes to organise my tasks effectively and manage resources and timelines to achieve the project goals on time. These phases provide a structured framework for completing projects and producing a quality final product (Project Management Institute, Inc., 2017) (Appendix 13).
(Appendix 13: Phase Of Project Management)

Phase 1: Project Initiation
At the beginning of this project, I initiated the idea of creating a documentary titled A Day in the Life of a Football Coachand contacted Max via email to ask if he would like to collaborate with me as the main subject. I first carried out research into the documentary topic before reaching out to him, which led to introducing myself and discussing the project with Max.
Phase 2: Project Initiation
In this process, I created a plan and schedule with Max in order to keep every stage of the project organised. This included arranging meeting dates as well as filming dates. For the first project assignment presentation in this module, I created contingency plans and a risk assessment to prevent unexpected problems or situations that could occur during the project (Appendix 14). I also prepared a budget plan that included all expected costs (Appendix 15). Additionally, I developed a storyboard that I could apply throughout the project, including camera angles and different scenes (Appendix 16).
(Appendix 14: Contingency Plan/Risk Assessment)

(Appendix 15: Hypothetical Budget)

(Appendix 16: Story Board)

Phase 3: Project Execution
Due to my collaborative project plan prepared in advance (Appendix 2), I completed all soundtrack music before filming, which made the process easier. It helped me match scenes to the music and estimate the film length from the soundtrack durations. The documentary footage was filmed first, followed by the interview to better reflect Max’s story. During editing, I imported all footage into the software (Appendix 11), arranged the clips in order, and structured the interview to create a clear documentary style.
Phase 4: Project Performance and Controlling
I made sure that my project remained on the right track by delivering an initial presentation to the class, introducing my project, including the project proposal, inspiration and influences, methodology, timeline, and market analysis in a PowerPoint presentation (Appendix 17).
I received feedback from my final presentation through Microsoft Forms, and I have included the questions I asked along with example responses showing areas I need to improve in this project (Appendix 12):
- What are your first impressions of this final product? and What is your initial impression of the final product?
- First impressions were quite low, as the music by itself isn’t as engaging – but in the context of the documentary, most of it fits quite well (though a little more variation would be welcomed)!
- Good, perhaps music was sadder than it should have been in places
2. Do the audio and visuals complement each other effectively?
- Yes you’ve explored different musical themes and as soon as I heard the first one it instantaneously sounded like it belonged in a football video of some form.
- Yes, I would just be careful with mixing the dialogue and music to ensure the dialogue is always clear. You can use your reference videos for that maybe.
3. What is your view of the overall mix and production quality?
- The mix and production is very well done with nothing to complain about.
- Sounds generally good, but maybe some of the sounds could have a bit more subtle variation to avoid sounding too robotic or repetitive (eg adjusting timing and variation of vst instruments parts)
4. How do you view the product from a musical perspective? (composition / arrangement / structure)
- It’s all put together really well and follows a simple but effective structure to follow along with
- Good, but potentially could use more variation between sections
5. Can you identify any weaknesses or areas that could be improved?
- Having a person dedicated to videography and editing would elevate your project to the next level
- Just the MiDI sounding guitar part currently
6. Did you enjoy listening to this piece?
- Yes
- Yes! It’s really fun and interesting
7. Are there any additional observations or comments you would like to share?
- Just above, but great project Paul
- It’s an impressive final piece. Musical content especially.
(Appendix 17: First presentation powerpoint)
Phase 5: Project Closure
In this project closure phase, I finalised the project by completing all processes, including planning, production, editing, and receiving feedback. I checked the checklist to ensure that I met all requirements and learning objectives according to the assignment brief. I also double-checked the video and audio to ensure that all footage, music, and other elements were correctly organised. In addition, I reviewed feedback from my tutor and classmates and made final adjustments. After completing these changes and confirming that the project was fully finished, I submitted the final video on time.
5. Reference Material/Inspiration
Documentary References:
I found inspiration for my documentary on YouTube from a film called The Summer Football Came Home | England Euro 96 Documentary | ITV Sport by the ITV Sport channel (Reference) (Appendix 18). This documentary focuses on the UEFA Euro 1996 tournament held in England and provided a strong reference for me in terms of scene ideas, storytelling, and overall documentary structure.
Another source of inspiration for interview ideas and questions came from a YouTube video called Fearless Foxes: Our Story | Leicester City’s 2015/16 Premier League Title from the Leicester City YouTube channel (Reference). The interview style in this documentary inspired me, particularly the way the story is told gradually throughout the video. I applied a similar storytelling method in my own documentary, especially at the beginning of the film.
(Appendix 18: Documentary from ITV)

(Appendix 19: Documentary from Leicester City)

Music References:
In terms of music, I aimed to create around six tracks and carried out research mainly on YouTube for inspiration. The soundtrack includes a range of emotions such as emotional, sad, happy, energetic, and nostalgic moods.
My first inspiration came from Cinematic and Emotional Background Music For Documentary Videos & Film by MorningLightMusic (2016), which influenced the opening track (Appendix 20). The second was inspired by MasterChef Thailand Season 1, Episode 1, which helped me create an energetic orchestral piece (Appendix 21).
For a playful style, I was inspired by Hell’s Kitchen Thailand EP.6 (2024), which led to a violin-based track (Appendix 22). My nostalgic piano track was inspired by a YouTube cinematic piece (AShamaluevMusic, 2019) (Appendix 23). I also used my previous rock music ideas to create a track for the football pitch scenes (Appendix 24).

6. Use of Technology
Filming
Camera: I used my iPhone 16 Pro Max to film the entire documentary, including both cinematic scenes and interviews. The quality of the iPhone 16 Pro Max is comparable to some professional cameras, so I decided to use it in order to reduce production costs (Appendix 25).
(Appendix 25: iPhone 16 Pro max)

Gimbal:I have owned my DJI Osmo Mobile 3 for a long time, so I decided to use this gimbal for filming most of the shots, as the project required stable footage and reduced vibration while recording. I believed this was the best solution for a gimbal that could be used with my phone. I chose a DJI gimbal because the brand is known for its high standards within the industry (Appendix 26).
(Appendix 26: DJI Gimbal OSMO Mobile 3)
Microphone: I invested in buying a new microphone that would provide high-quality sound while remaining affordable. The DJI Mic Mini was the best choice, as it cost only £65 and came with two wireless microphones, which I could use for both myself and the interviewee (Appendix 27).
(Appendix 27: DJI Mic mini)

Audio Production
Every soundtrack for this documentary was produced in Logic Pro X using plugins only, with no acoustic instruments recorded, in order to save both time and cost. All tracks were created on my home laptop setup and included elements such as orchestra, drums, bass, and synthesizers. Due to the variety of scenes in the documentary, which required a wide range of musical styles, I used similar plugins while changing the theme and arrangement to create different moods. For example, soundtracks 2 and 4 (Appendix 21 and 22) used the same Logic Pro X stock plugin with the same preset but different velocity settings (Appendix 28).
(Appendix28: Different Velocity setting)

To enhance the dramatic mood of one track, I aimed to create a mellow piano sound. I selected the Logic Pro X Grand Piano and rolled off the high frequencies using a low-pass filter to create a softer and more emotional tone (Appendix 29).
(Appendix 29: Low Pass Filter)

For the string section, I used the stock string ensemble presets, including violin, viola, cello, and double bass. I applied minimal processing to the orchestral sounds because I wanted them to sound natural and blend with the surrounding ambience (Appendix 30).
(Appendix 30: String ensemble effect chain)

The synthesizer was used in my first track as a pad to support the overall arrangement. The plugin used was Sculpture, a stock Logic Pro X instrument, with the preset called Airways, which provided a soft pad texture (Appendix 31).
(Appendix 31: Pad Synthesizer)

For my final track, which had a rock style, I used the drum plugin ODEHOLM Drums, available in Kontakt (Appendix 32). The drums were then processed with EQ and compression, followed by guitar and bass parts, which were recorded through my Focusrite Solo 3 audio interface (Appendix 33) using my Line 6 Pod Go multi-effects unit (Appendix 34).
(Appendix 32: ODEHOLM Drums)

(Appendix 33: Focusrite solo 3)

(Appendix 34: Line 6 Pod Go multi-effects unit)

Techniques
My main technique for making orchestral tracks sound more effective was using appropriate ambient reverb. Most of the strings and orchestral percussion were processed using the ChromaVerb plugin in Logic Pro X with the Large Room preset, which creates a wide reverb space that suits the overall cinematic theme of the soundtrack (Appendix 35).
(Appendix 35: ChromaVerb Plugin)

Another technique I used was applying subtle reverb on the master bus. According to my research from musicguymixing.com under the article “How to Use Reverb on the Master Bus”, this technique can help enhance mix cohesion and add depth to a track (Music Guy Mixing, 2025). Therefore, I used the Enverb plugin in Logic Pro X with a very subtle setting of 100% dry and 5% wet (Appendix 36).
(Appendix 36: Enverb Plugin)

7. Evaluation
Product/Process Evaluation
Overall, I believe this project was very successful and achieved most of its goals, including meeting the timeline, completing the project, and producing a strong final product. My main aim was to create a professional documentary with Max, supported by original soundtrack music, which I achieved. Max was pleased with the final result and can potentially use it to promote his business.
The soundtracks were also successful, creating the intended emotions and communicating effectively with the audience, as shown in the feedback form (Appendix 12).
Feedback from my tutor and classmates was valuable in helping me evaluate my work and identify areas for improvement. This project also helped me build my professional portfolio and gain experience in composing music for film, which may support future career opportunities.
Communication was a key factor in the success of this project. Strong communication with Max helped us achieve our goals and stay on schedule through weekly milestones and checklists.
Weakness
One of the main weaknesses of this project was the budget, due to poor budget management and overspending on equipment. However, in order to achieve a high standard for the project, I was able to complete it with financial support from my parents.
Another weakness was the amount of time spent on the editing stage. As I completed every aspect of the project myself, the editing process took a significant amount of time because I had to learn many editing skills from online resources, unlike music production skills, which I already had experience in.
Future Development
Future improvements would include developing my field recording technique. With a larger budget, I would invest in equipment such as a shotgun microphone or professional field recorder to capture higher-quality audio.
Another improvement would be to build a larger production team for bigger projects. I found it challenging to manage every aspect of the project alone, so working with specialists would help achieve a higher-quality final product.
In terms of sound design, feedback from my tutor and classmates suggested that some music elements could sound fuller and more melodic. Therefore, in the future I would carry out more research into composing music for film projects.
