Introduction and Proposed Project

This document will discuss the viability of these projects:

• Music for a snake (retro style) modern computer game – Synth based retro game inspired music with a modern twist (modern sounds with a retro influence).

• Music for a Windows XP style visual novel game – Retro style Lo-Fi music.

• Music for a relaxing puzzle computer game – Retro style Lo-Fi music.

• Music for a website portfolio (space themed) – Ambient, space inspired music.

My goal is to create a 3 minute music track for each of these projects. My collaborator’s goal is to create 3 commercial games and a website.

My collaborator is an individual game developer based in Scotland, I will be working with her remotely; this project will be solely carried out by the two of us.

Here are some conversations we have had:

The image above is the first time my collaborator contacted me, asking me if I could make music for their game.

The images and audio above are related to the first track I made for my collaborator (the Windows XP style visual novel game).

The images above show the conversation in where I proposed the collaboration and my collaborators response.

Methodology & Rationale

Firstly, let us discuss the viability of myself as a collaborator in these projects.

I am an established Lo-Fi music Artist/Producer under the name Pur8ty with a reputable background, having over 1 million streams across music streaming platforms and past collaborations with Lo-Fi record label Chillhop Music.

(SoundCloud, 2023)

Although I mainly release Lo-Fi music, I have experience in many other music genres and making music for media, here are some examples:

Music for a deep sea story:

Music for a storytelling video:

Hard electronic music:

I will be approaching each of these projects the same way, here is an example of my approach and methodology in working on this collaboration:

In the image above is a conversation I had with my collaborator about deadlines and about the space themed project.

Early January is a deadline that worked for both of us, except for the space themed project which my collaborator needed by December 3rd.

I asked her for any references that I could work off of and she sent me a soundtrack:

While I was listening to this soundtrack I was picking out tracks in it which would work in the context of the project and listening to them while I picked out sounds and instruments in Ableton Live that worked well with the music I was listening to, to try and capture the same aesthetic of the references.

Here is a link to the soundtrack:

The image above shows my collaborators response to the track I made for this collaboration. This was exactly what she wanted so I did not need to make any corrections, but, hypothetically if she did not like it or wanted anything changing I would work with her feedback until I create something that she likes.

I then sent her the MP3 and WAV files and a looping version.

Market Analysis

For my market analysis I looked into soundtracks from games and media that align with the themes of the projects and the music I am working on for them and the target audiences of those games and how well received they were by different groups of people.

The snake game and the puzzle game are quite broad in target audiences as both can be enjoyed by younger and older people.

The snake game has both retro themes with modern gameplay and graphics which links both younger audiences who are exploring modern games and older audiences who are looking for something simple and nostalgic. The music I will be making for this game will be simple and broad enough to be enjoyed by a wide audience, fusing retro game synths and sounds with a more modern and less restricted composition, similar to modern arcade style games and other modern snake games.

The puzzle game similarly will be aimed at a wider audience of people of all ages who are looking for a relaxing puzzle game. The music I will be making for this game will reflect this, being relaxing and easy to listen to for everyone.

The Windows XP style visual novel is less broad, being catered towards more mature audiences (the game having more mature themes), and those who can appreciate the retro aesthetic. Although Windows XP was released in 2001, the aesthetic of the operating system has become appreciated by many young adult dominated communities and music genres such as future bass; this project will be targeted towards these audiences.

The space themed project is for a website about the game Kerbal Space Program, this would be targeted towards people who like this game, which is why it was important for me to make a track that is fitting with the soundtrack, yet works in the context of a website.

Costs and Budgeting

I do not need to spend any money to meet my goals with this project.

Hypothetically if I did not have access to the equipment that I have, I would book a studio to work in, here are some I found in Leeds that I have used in the past:

(Google Maps, 2021)

(Pirate.com, 2025)

(Pirate.com, 2025)

To work out which would be better for me, I worked out how long I would need to work on the tracks:

For a 3 minute track it usually takes me around an hour to make, so three tracks would be 4 hours.

I decided that it would be a better idea to have an 8 hour session while on call with my collaborator to give good time for feedback and making any corrections.

An 8 hour session would cost £64

My hypothetical profits:

£35 per track + 5% of each sale

£35 x 4 = £140

£140 – £64 = £76 Profit + 5% of each sale

This would give me an estimated hourly rate of £9.50 which is below minimum wage.

My actual profits:

£35 per track + 5% of each sale

£35 x 4 = £140

£140 Profit + 5% of each sale

This would give me an estimated hourly rate of £17.50 which is a fair number for this project.

Hypothetical funding:

(PRS for Music Foundation, 2024)

PRS Foundation would be a great option if I wasn’t in full-time education, yet exceptions are possible.

(Arts Council England, 2025)

Arts Council England would be a good option as they would offer support for experimenting with new collaborators or partners.

(Amplify.link, 2024)

Amplify World would be a good option if I was to include my collaborations as part of my artist project (Pur8ty) as they would expect me to use their funding to grow as an artist.

Inspiration & Influences

My inspiration and influences differ for each project.

For the two games that involve Lo-Fi music (The Windows XP style game and the puzzle game), I have been mainly inspired by Lo-Fi in other video games, such as the tracks below:

(Youtube.com, 2025)

(Youtube.com, 2025)

My inspiration for the snake game is from another modern snake game with retro gameplay aspects:

(Youtube.com, 2025)

My inspiration for the space themed website was the soundtrack my collaborator referenced, but before she referenced this I was listening to ambient based soundtracks to games set in space as this is originally the description of what my collaborator gave to me. Here is an example of what I listened to:

(Youtube.com, 2025)

Contingency/Risk Assessment

My main risks with these projects would be:

• Production block – Finding myself in moments where I am struggling to produce music; lack of creative flow. I would have to wait until I am ready to produce music again. This risk is not too difficult for me to manage as I know how to take care of this and revive my creative energy.

• Unsatisfactory work – My work not being up to my collaborators standards, I would have to either make corrections, redo the tracks or drop out of the project. This is not a risk I am worried about as I am confident in my abilities within these genres and briefs and have good communication with my collaborator.

• Unreliability on my collaborator’s end of the project.

I have some safety measures in place for working on this project:

• Working with genres I am comfortable with.

• Past resources – Sound libraries for many genres.

• I have security in my past experiences with this collaborator to know that they are reliable.

Potential for Development

This project has potential to develop into a larger scale project where I will be working on the full soundtracks for these games.

Evaluation Viability

I presented this project to an audience of other musicians who are working on collaborative projects, here is some feedback they gave me:

I also had positive feedback by the people I presented to, all giving me positive feedback on the viability of my project.

To conclude, regarding my skill level / experience in music production and collaborating with my collaborator, the sufficiency of my plan, the positive feedback I have from both my collaborator and other established people in the industry, I am confident in the viability of this collaborative project in it’s respectful context.
