What is a film composer and how do I make it into a successful career?
A film composer in the simplest of terms is a “…powerful partner for a filmmaker.” (wrapbook,2023). They enhance storytelling by embedding a layer of harmony that non-musicians don’t understand yet still feel the impact of. Film composers have a deep understanding of music and the influence it has on a scene. They are “powerful partners” because of their ways of informing the audience of what is about to happen in the film through a language that not everyone speaks. The motivation for this essay is due to the fact that for a film composer to have a stable career it is difficult to maintain. This is demonstrated by 77.4% of composers are freelancing and only 6.8% are full time composers (Planit, 2026). This essay intends to explore what a composer does and ways in which a stable career can be established from it. This research has been divided into three subsections: the enhancement of production companies and directors, growth marketing strategies and what can be done to enhance employability.
Enhancing directors/production companies
There are many ways in which a composer can enhance the director’s vision, one of which is by enhancing the narrative through music. A composer “…helps support the storyline, conveys emotions and helps to set the tone and mood of the film…the relationship between the director, whose every effort is put forward to convey the best version of the film they can” (Marianthemusic,2026) By interpreting what Marianthe music has said, the way to have a good movie is by creating a relationship with the director. To do that, being a part of the pre-production stage and having the first conversation with the director, the composer builds on a professional collaboration. This also entails spotting the film alongside the director and discussing what certain characters’ leitmotif’s would be. It consolidates a great working environment that leads to an efficient production of the film. Nevertheless, the music shows how good the director and composer relationship is, which coincides with grasping the style of choice of a composer.
Consolidating a unique way to exemplify the style of composing, can also be marketed in a way that would bring traction to the film. Applying a knowledge of what works best in commercial film making will increase professional collaboration. Modern Media Composer presents a valid argument. “A film composer has to be two things: a great artist and a great entrepreneur”. Like any other creative industry, film composing is an art form that takes time to master, so understanding the marketable aspects of which a composer can showcase their unique style, is a crucial and susceptible way to draw an audience and potential clientele. But where this argument may falter, is to the fact that composers are not as proficient in entrepreneurship. Which is why to some degree, knowing what trends are being used to produce strategic videos will always aid you to surpass anyone who does not have an understanding of their style. A composer’s greatest way of promoting themselves whilst elevating the directors vision is by understanding what the industry demands and the style of composing that would be used to market, which is known as Unique Selling Point (USP).
USP as defined by Optimizely, “…is the essence of what makes your product or service better than competitors.” Nevertheless, it can also be applied to freelancing as a composer. Having a unique style, will demonstrate to the director that the composer knows their craft well and will likely want to build that relationship. This can then be optimised as a marketing strategy in promoting the film. Take Danny Elfman and Tim Burton. In Tim Grieving’s 2025 Classical Voice, Danny Elfman described Tim Burton as “another punk creative who was too strange for the Disney company, where he started out as an animator.” Their collaboration showcases when there is a “strange” way that may not be considered conventional, when marketed the right way, it can provide great coverage for the film. Tim Burton created a film franchise with this unconventional way of producing. Therefore, discovering a stylistic choice for a composer is crucial and affects what a client would want from you.
My style is being developed by experimenting with different styles such as orchestral, hybrid and synthesised elements. However, my style increasingly leans to a hybrid score, which combines orchestral styles with synths that creates a textural and organic sound. This has been influenced by composers such as James Newton Howard and Natalie Holt, who both have shown how hybrid orchestration brings emotional and original sounds to alter the scenes dynamically in ways that are unique.
Marketing strategy
As a society we have grown, and so has the influence of social media. So, understanding trends and ways to showcase the works of a composer is the best way to grow. In 2021, Jack Hughes compiled 5 Steps to take to advance a freelancing composer. The steps include: writing; not just composing but writing in the sense of advocating and educating the viewers on equipment or suggestions on how to compose a certain genre, growing social media platforms, collaborations; this shows a great commitment and credibility for future prospects as it establishes teamwork and trust, education; amplifying what the composers’ been taught which would then be taught to others, and expert knowledge; viewers do not trust others that have no knowledge on someone’s niche. These steps are useful for a freelancer and they have already accumulated a lot of knowledge to produce outstanding scores so it would not be difficult to create content based on what they already know. However, expanding the range of knowledge and in turn providing that insight to viewers will build stronger connections. Knowing the audience and understanding what it is that they want to see will inherently aid growing social media platforms.
Trends are subject to rapid change, which is why properly researching what could be next is a great way of evolving with them. Examining a wide range of secondary resources such as websites that include trends of the month; such as Adobe and Forbes, and following personnel that educate the public about the trends; such as Crowdriff – who provides insights on current trends, it is suggested that adapting trends to a niche such as film composition is going to follow with a substantial growth on platforms. Trends such as short form videos where presenting a day in a life or behind the scenes of a niche is becoming very popular, where 73% marketers are prioritising this to boost their numbers, this is due to the lack of an attention span which over the years has shrunk from 12s to 8s (A. Lee and Elad, March 2026). The shift in the audience’s attention means that a composer must adapt the functionality of their content and create videos that audiences will interact with by creating content that is visually and audibly shocking. Creating powerful visuals will attract the right viewers and pique their curiosity. Therefore, having a strategy of what to post, what visual hooks could be used to promote a sector of compositions and researching trends that can be implemented into the chosen niche, will essentially support the growth of USP.
Customising content to fit film composing when composers aren’t well equipped for enhancing themselves in a social marketing sector, can be difficult to overcome. However, the best way to produce content whilst working is by creating a content planner. By doing some research on how to achieve this, digitalboost explores ways in which a content creator can keep organised and still produce videos in a way that is sustainable. That includes planning the key themes that would be introduced into the schedule, defining the styles of content and using a planning tool to keep track of videos that need to be done. Why the content planner would work for a composer, not only would they be able to still have the creative freedom to compose but it also allows them to promote themselves. An example of a content plan for what I would do for my personal social media is attached below (picture 1* and picture 2*). To make a brand more cohesive, utilising other forms of promotions such as a website where everything is cohesive, in terms of the statement colours to style of website which is cohesive to the ones on their social media will aid potential clients to form an opinion for their brand.

A way to enhance engagement for a composer is by creating an engaging website that showcases current and previous projects. Alongside a website Soundcloud is a great platform in which a musician and composer is able to release music and gain PRS from it too. In the video created by Liam Killen, although 6 years old, validates a premise of how social media works. He talks about how paying a bot to engage with other creators was a great way of boosting himself but still did not give him the right engagement. Where this video fails to render information is how social media has evolved and now, the audience do not want “content bombing” (Craig,2018) they want to see visually pleasing content that will entertain or educate, which then builds a credibility. For a film composer, the content can be manipulated to describe what they are working on, describing what they did and why they did it. Alongside brand and content, Soundcloud is designed to aid musicians and composers by implementing the choices for songs and pieces to be distributed. By learning the ins and outs of the industry and how distribution of music is a big part of developing a flourishing livelihood in a profession that is quite hard to get into. PRS is designed to aid musicians in the distribution sector.
PRS, is a company whose role is to help freelancers understand the legal aspect and what licensing they need. Understanding the different licenses required for music to be played and to get revenue is very important. The two licenses that would be useful is the Tv broadcast licence; a licence that covers music that is part of programmes, trailers and adverts that is rated by BARB (broadcaster’s audience research board), and the independent Production Companies (IPC); it is a licence that uses the copying of MCPS in commercial music and production music to then be used in TV programmes or online platforms. Knowing the wants and needs of the market, will aid a freelancer how to seize opportunities by already having the right licensing.
Employment opportunities
There are quite a few distinguishable ways that a film composer can get a job in the industry. One of them is becoming an assistant composer. An assistant composer’s job is to help manage the composer’s time so that their focus is on the composing. The assistant does the admin roles like backing up to SSD cards or even menial jobs such as coffee runs. Understanding the ways that the project could go wrong, whether a routing issue or others, knowing how to tackle that challenge which creates a credibility that increases the likelihood of future opportunities.
Employing a strategy where taking the initiative on building connections, will aid in building a successful career. To establish these viable relationships, it’s important to go to networking events where the composer can market themselves in a professional manner. Another way to form these relationships is by getting an internship in the industry, the professionals are in the role of a mentor meaning they are guiding the intern to become an efficient worker in the office. An internship would also be great as there would be opportunities to build contacts and create long lasting relationships. A method to keep the relationships strong is through emailing the interested party for a small session discussing their careers and current projects that you are working on, this builds a connection which can then be pushed further by updates. One way of taking an initiative is by having a portfolio that demonstrates the capability of a composer, which could then be utilised in internships or events where the opportunities arise to showcase portfolios.
A showreel of all the projects that have been done would be inherently an excellent way to showcase to potential clientele. A showreel is essentially a “musical CV” (Drane, 2019) which is a crucial part to get right, having a variety of styles of tracks but also still having a specific sound is what people look for in a showreel. Researching different composers’ showreels, the showreels have different lengths and different ways of presenting their works. But what worked really well, which I will do for my showreel (see Video 1*); whilst watching Thomas Van de Burg’s showreel he wrote in big bold letters who he is, what he does and the year of the showreel, and then proceeded to write at the bottom of the projects what he actually did in the film. Compared to Van de Burg’s showreel, the other two felt rushed and not as informative about what their role was within the film. Creating a portfolio that demonstrates personal style would ultimately leave a positive impression. However, there are some downsides to showreels. They only show a limited portion of a composer’s character which could only be showcased through an entire film. It is also quite high maintenance as a composer would need to update the showreel frequently to update when they get new projects. Overall, showreels are a great way to accumulate your portfolio, but they also do take a lot of time to maintain.
Obtaining employment in the film industry is already a challenge as it is. However, the art professional article dictates that the overall direction of the film market is rising. With the increase of streaming services from 2015-2024 being an increase of 240% (Uswitch, 2025), leads to a high demand of employment in different sectors. Which leads me to what my plans are for future projects and how I plan to develop a career in the industry.
To build a career in a creative industry is by making the right connections, the steps that I would take would involve what I previously said, I would attempt to get an internship whether it is as a composer’s assistant or a production internship both will teach me valuable skills and help me to create relationships which could lead to promising opportunities later. Furthermore, I plan to continue to promote myself through social media to gain traction from people my age or younger in hopes to inspire them. It would be a great way to demonstrate what I can do which will lead to collaborating more with student films that can then be implemented in my repertoire and portfolio which could then be showcased at networking events. I also would do other roles that may not specifically lead to composing at first but may lead to opportunities in the entertainment industry, such as being a runner for production or assistant producing for theatre shows. Being adaptable to the evolving industry is what will aid to position yourself in the trade. In the long term I would aim to sign myself to a production company that has a music department or I would even start my own Music Library company.
In conclusion, pursuing a career as a film composer contains a variety of obstacles due to its freelancing nature and the increase of competition. However, by creating a unique style, collaborative nature and implementing sustainable marketing strategies will help a composer to achieve a sustainable career. Successful composers such as Hans Zimmer and John Williams, showcase a long-term career by how adaptable they were, how persistent they were and how much they have developed over the years. Therefore, by combining creativity with entrepreneurial awareness is essential to acquire and navigate the film industry.
