Justify decisions on what is included:
The structural of my EPK makes it suitable for my intended audience as it focus on a clear linear format making it easy to find information quick about me for any potential music industry, professionals, employers or people who want collaborate,” An EPK covers the who, what, when, where, and why of your music. Clear visuals and concise text will tell the story.” (Terrvform, 2025). I’ve focused on putting in relevant information rather than everything I’ve ever done to keep it up-to-date. I’ve also focused on having a Colour scheme and professional pictures to make it stand out and be aesthetically pleasing.
When I look over my EPK, there are still a few areas that I’d like to improve on in the future, such as having more testimonials that focus on me as a singer; I’ll be able to get these once I’ve done more gigs as a solo artist rather than within the band. Another area I’d like to improve on in the future is my contact and social media page, which I feel lacks compared to the rest of the EPK. You also find when you go on social media that there isn’t anything uploaded which doesn’t look great to music industry professionals. In the future, I want to post on the platforms and add more content, such as future music, gigs and music-related experiences.
For my EPK, I wanted it to really reflect the type of music I am currently creating, which is very basic raw vocals and a warm grand piano sound. I’ve opted for more warm, earthy colours and a classic font, which I believe effortlessly reflects the music. I’ve also got a lot of my live performance images in there to help keep my authentic self showing within my work, instead of just trying to hype myself up. I’ve definitely wanted to keep the EPK professional and have a grounded feel in both experiences and genuine artistry altogether.
I opted to do an EPK instead of just having solely my Instagram as a place for any musical professionals to look and view because I believe they don’t compare, and they’re both separate platforms. “Social media is important for growing your audience, but an EPK is a centralised, professional document that presents you in the best possible light.”(Berklee College of Music, n.d.). A musician has to have a presence on Instagram to get a lot of engagement and be discovered by many different types of audiences. It’s very algorithm-based, while an EPK is direct and helps close the deal. My current Instagram doesn’t have much on it compared to my EPK, which I spoke about previously. I wanted to improve, so solely just having my Instagram would definitely not sell me to any music professionals.
Market research:
For my EPK, I want to attract a large audience. The primary audience that I wanted to be most interesting to and beneficial to is music professionals, such as producers, collaborators and media outlets. I’ve done this by adding a lot of information about my work, what I’m capable of, and Images and videos. The secondary audience i want to please but it’s not particularly tailored to them is any consumer that listen to my music as separate platforms such music on streaming platforms aswell as social media “Social media offers a direct line of communication between artist and their audiences.” so an epk may not be what my target audience will be looking for when looking into me. Genre wise I believe my EPK attracts the correct audience based on the aesthetic I have provided within,I have kept the nice deep brown and red cooler scheme which gives off warm mature tone which I relate to more soulful R&B style music which is definitely the realm I’m currently Creating in, my EPK fits well within the genre and industry that I’m able towards as it includes skills and experiences which a lot of professionals are looking for. It also includes professionally taking photography to a high standard, and any password that I’ve done, which includes gig recordings and scoring, which shows my range of ability. Also, I have been included on contact and social media, which makes it easy for people to get in contact with me whenever they need to in regards to anything.
In my area, which I define as a singer’s epk, it’s common practice to have promotional information about themselves, whether that be a bio, music links, photos, and videos that are currently relevant to what they are creatively trying to achieve. What I prefer about this practice is that it provides a quick and easy way for music professionals to assess an artist’s potential, as it consists of and is easy to find relevant information. Many EPKs can feel impersonal and unrelated to how the singer wants to portray themselves artistically, whilst also trying to include information that is irrelevant to what is currently happening or just too much information. My EPK falls into the category of keeping up to date with relevant content and keeping a cohesive brand feel with a stand-out colour theme and professional photography.
Financial and Legal Elements:
An EPK is directly related to driving an artist revenue because it is designed to attract industry professionals which then later will offer artist jobs and paid opportunities When you’re presenting your work in a professional format it will increase the chances of the promoters and booking agencies contacting you and get you booked for different jobs as it shows your ethics and how experienced you are so they can invest in what y out have to offer.
Typically, an EPK will have different areas that will need money invested into it to make it look as professional and high-quality as possible. For me, these were
trademark protection: £170 and then £50 for any additional parts (UK Intellectual Property Office, 2024)
Photography: typically £150–£500+ for high-res, branded shots; however, I was able to contact a friend who was able to do this for free and also use the university studios as a photography backdrop, so I was able to cut those costs (Checkatrade, 2023)
Graphic Design: £100–£400 for layout, logo, and consistency, however, I was able to custom Design mine myself and for the future will send this over to my dad, who is a graphic web designer, so will also be able to cut these costs (DesignRush, 2023)
Domain Name: £10–£30/year(GoDaddy, 2023)
Music cover copyrights : depending on the inidivual record labels on how much but can vary from 50 to hundred of thousands.
Group Work:
Within our group work session, there were many points made that helped me improve my EPK whilst I was in the creative process. One of these points of discussion was the artist bio. Within our group, we got separated into subgroups and were handed out different artist bios. We then had our feedback on what we thought was relevant with the artist bio we were reviewing, and what we thought didn’t need to be in there. We then took a part and rearranged it to be consistent and punchy. With this, I found that the more irrelevant things, such as older events that happened when you were younger, and things unrelated to the creative idea I am trying to showcase, didn’t need to be incorporated, so that a clear sense of the artist’s vision and message will be able to come across. Another session that helped me refine and improve my epk was when we presented our ideas infront of our classes, with this i had a few critics from pers and teachers such as recommedation that maybe i should get some professional picture taken to help with protraying the choosen theme i want represent through my music and also incorprating work that doesn’t just relate to my singing as i have also done some film scoring work and teaching work to show off my more musical experiences to be more appealing to different industry professional. I took on both of these ideas for my EPK. When compared to my previous mock-up, it definitely helps improve my professionalism and overall aesthetic, which I hadn’t achieved before. When comparing artists who are already successful i noticed that a common theme throughout was that they kept there websites aligned with the most recent music release, this counts as a way of them promotioning themselves and how they are using relevent projects to promote themselves which help draws attention of journalist and any potential gig optionunittes for smaller artists, I thought this would be a good idea to keep up with in the future so i stay commited to my brand aesthetic. Something that I want to improve on my EPK in the future, majorly, is getting it onto a working domain and securing a web handle so that I have the right and licenses to protect my brand, uniqueness, and identity. I also want to make my contact page with my social media handles more appealing with more content on them, as previously spoken about my current social medias dont have any of my musical content on, to any industry professional looking and not finding anything it show lack of committment which doesnt align with what i want to represent as a musical artist, in the future i want to definate post content music relate and set up a TikTok page that post regular content that boost me on the allgorithms leding to a broader audience gain.
