Task 2: Supporting Commentary + Evidence of Group Work and Evaluation
Due to not having an incoming fan base alongside content which would potentially help grow this, I have opted to keep my EPK relatively formal and reserved (can be seen through the colours used). This has been done to possibly show smaller venues (Kealey, 2024), which I could potentially contact using this EPK, and to have a sense of credibility from the limited number of testimonials I have regarding the music hoping to be performed, for it to then result in performing time at the said venue, for example. Furthermore, I have attempted to reduce as much “clutter” on the “screen real estate” provided (Owsinski, 2020:54)
With Indian Pop music gaining popularity within India (Haq, 2023), when compared to the dominant force of Bollywood music, being a potential market area of mine, I have attempted to cater to this audience by immediately mentioning the demographic within the start of my Artist bio, at the start of the EPK. To further accentuate this, I have used Yellow/Gold colours as they are incredibly prevalent in Indian culture, with Yellow having associations with “ warmth” within the said culture (Nazanin, 2021)
This is also relevant to the album cover of “Harry’s House”, with it being one of the key artistic inspirations I have mentioned within the body of the EPK, associating my artistic image with that album and consequently the artist. The artist has a very diverse consumer base, something which I hope to emulate and hence by emulating his colour palette, I hope to draw in that similar consumer base. Despite having a diverse fandom, a notable portion of his consumer base is people in their “early teens to upper 20s into mid-30s” (Baker, 2023). This aligns with the ages of “Gen Z” and “Millennials”, aligning with consumption trends of “Pop” music, with regards to millennial music consumption (Kosinski & Global, 2023), which is the genre I aim to fall into. By emulating a popular artist in this space, both visually (through the colour association within the body of the EPK) and musically, I aim for the EPK to attract consumers effectively and provide the essence and confidence of an artist of a similar right to potential record labels and venues. This is an example of an attempt at “Target marketing”, with the term being defined as “the process of selecting one or more market segments and then developing a product and offer specifically at those segments” (Adcock et al., 2001:126). This has been done in conjunction with trying to appeal to other markets as well, with the primary focus being on the ones pinpointed.
I would aim to improve the quality of the images with them being in settings where I am performing, in order to portray the “emotive” side I mention in my Artist Bio and to achieve this, I would need to perform more in more professional settings. As well as this, I hope to be an artist who releases their music, so in the future, with changes to this EPK, I would add more of my music as I develop this EPK. Being an unproven artist yet, I have opted to put the testimonials I have received near the beginning of the EPK to show the credibility of my limited work so far. In the context of this EPK being viewed by potential venues and record labels, my aim is that, at a glance, there is a positive affirmation of my skills, and therefore, a positive and reliable stance is shown immediately. However, I do hope to receive testimonials from contributors outside of audience members, from more well-renowned persons within the pop music space. This would be to add a heightened sense of legitimacy, achieving this by performing more in general and updating this section as my career progresses, as is the case with other sections, like the aforementioned press images.
When debating whether an EPK should be used against an Instagram account, I believe that both should be used in tandem with each other. By attaching an Instagram account(s) to an EPK, it provides another pathway for the content that is being produced by the artist to be consumed, if the EPK is the viewer’s first interaction with the artist. The same is true with the inverse, for example, if news outlets or interviewers were to try and gain more information around the artist before interacting with them, having seen the Instagram page before the EPK.
Taking in the financial aspects of the EPK, namely costs, to bring them to the level required for future updates of the EPK prices for the different aspects would be as follows:
- Photography: When hiring a freelance photographer for a day, a standard rate would be a figure around £400 (“before production charges and expenses”), with a lower limit of £300 (National Union of Journalists, 2021). These figures increase when hiring higher-budget photographers.
- Domain names: Domains incur an annual cost and vary with pricing depending on which service is used, but a typical price range can be seen as $10 to $20 per year. There are additional costs as well, including privacy protection, and if the domain is one that is sought after (being typically “shorter, more specific, and memorable”), then the price of this would range much higher than a standard domain. However, by having a longer contract length, the price of the domain can be lowered (Dopson, 2025).
- Graphic design: As I am in the early stages of my career, I would opt to adopt and purchase a very limited number of designs, concerning logos and similar images. If hiring a freelance graphic designer, then prices can range between £50 to £500 and with “more complex graphic design projects”, prices can range from £1000 upward for work from “experienced freelance graphic artists” (Lifted Creative, 2024).
- Hosting: Many sites offer “free creation options” with these then having “paid subscriptions with marketing benefits” alongside some other possible costs (Bradbury, 2023). There are also paid subscriptions, such as the ones “Stampede Press” offer, with them having different prices for different lengths of time while they are hosted, going from £33.97 for three months, £54.94 for six months and £84.88 for 12 months (Stampede Press, 2024), with different providers charging different prices for their services
With regards to the Intellectual property that an EPK is surrounded by, there are considerations to be made:
- Trademarking: By registering a trademark, the UK government states that the owner of the trademark once registered can “take legal action against anyone who uses your brand without your permission, including counterfeiters”, “warning others against using [your brand]” as well as being able to “sell and license your brand” (n.d.). This proves that a trademark on a logo, for example, is useful and subsequently highly relevant.
- Domain names: Domain names themselves “are not intellectual property”, however, a trademark infringement claim can be made if “someone has registered a domain name using your registered trade mark in it”, “they registered it with the sole purpose of attracting visitors using your trade mark” and “they have no legitimate purpose to own the domain except for taking advantage of your popular name.” (Welham, 2022)
- Copyright: If the artist themselves is not taking the image then copyright law then permission will be required from the photographer who owns the rights to the images to, as the Intellectual Property Office says, “perform certain acts, such as copying the image or sharing it on the internet” (n.d.), with the latter being relevant to the EPK in particular
When discussing marketing costs, such as the costs surrounding targeted ads, there is a concept of “cost per click”, otherwise known as CPC, within the environment of social media advertising. The cost can vary depending on the social media platform, with some platforms charging a daily fee, some charging a monthly fee, and others charging based on a click. For example, Instagram charges £0.50 per click on average, and YouTube charges £6 per day (Airtasker, 2024).
One of the areas which was discussed around our EPKs, as part of our group discussion sessions and discussions outside of these sessions, was the necessity to keep our Artist Bios clear and concise. When initially drafting/writing my own Artist Bio, one part which was pointed out, being that I added unnecessary details which could be transferred to other sections of the EPK or could be omitted entirely, leading to an editing of the original of my Artist Bio, to stay more in line with this guidance/feedback.
