Synthesis process evidence

For this composition I used synthesis to create an atmospheric drone sound that can be heard all throughout the track, as well as a dissonant pluck that appears multiple times throughout. For both of these synths, I created them from scratch using PhasePlant.

This is the PhasePlant patch for the drone synth. To get a very wide sound I used oscillators with unison enabled to create multiple voices at once. I used ring modulation and chorus effects to give the sound a more eerie feel, which was very appropriate for the style of music that I worked with. Finally, I used a heavy amount of reverb to make the synth sound very atmospheric and distant.

This is the PhasePlant patch I made for the pluck sound. To create a very hard plucking sound effect, I set a very fast attack on the envelope that controlled both the gain of the oscillators themselves, as well as the filter. Phaseplant allows oscillators to have a “hard” unison setting, which means that the timing of each voice is very close to one another. This gives the sound a more percussive feel, which was good for the type of pluck sound I was going for. Finally, I used reverb and a dual delay to give the sound a distant feel.

Below is a short video of my composition running in its original DAW session.
