My composition was based on the alternative indie/pop genre while incorporating synths. This genre tends to include organic instruments such as guitar, Piano and drums and blending them with light synths that could fit into a pop song. I have done this by including acoustic guitar, piano and drums; and following the typical indie pop structure involving a verse chorus and bridge to maintain listener interest.

I used ‘Emo Song – Beabadoobee’ https://youtu.be/36w9rF9h1l8?si=OigPHbDkBaYwaunq as my reference track, which involves a synth based instrumentation within the chorus while complimenting pop genre elements such as the soft vocals and acoustic guitar.

Synthesis process evidence

Synth 1 – Lead

starting time – 1.55

I created this synth in retrolouge on cubase, LFO1 has a 1/8 frequency while LFO2 has a 1/2 frequency to create an effect as though the synth is bouncing off itself giving it a ‘space’ sounding atmosphere.

In the FX section I incorporated a delay effect to create a repetitive echo, I paired this with a reverb insert separate to the synth to emphasise the echo more. Along with this I panned the root note part of the synth to the right by 50% and the melodic part of the synth to the left 50%.

I wanted to use this synth to create an emotive sound to pair with the emotive lyricism and overall tone of the song, this was later on paired with heavily reverberated and delayed vocals that were panned left and right to blend in with this synth, this is so it can create a melodically overwhelming atmosphere to represent the nature of the song.

This synth was also based on the lead synth in ‘Emo Song – Beabadoobee’ as referenced above.

synth 2 – atmospheric

starting time – 27 seconds

This synth was created on padshop and sample based. I altered the delay and release to be heavily increased as I wanted it to be a pad synth to make it more atmospheric to fit into the background of the mix. I also added a chorus effect as a separate insert to increase the ambience.

I used this synth to make the overall track sound more full and relate to the indie pop genre by having a generic background pad synth.
