Inspiration

My two inspiration tracks were ‘Your Rhythm’ by Bree Tranter, and ‘Weird Fished / Arpeggi’ by Radiohead. My approach to this track was to create an experimental piece of music, based around rich texture and arrangement.

Synthesis Process

Outline of synthesis

Within the track, my use of synthesis primarily serves a textural function, as well as contributing to the experimental nature of the track. Below is an overview of the locations of the primary synthesisers, as well as my organisation into groups:

In line with the experimental approach, I largely aimed to use the logic synthesisers in a more sound design function, rather than creating specific sounds or emulating other synthesisers.

Vocoder

The first synthesiser heard is a Vocoder, triggered by the opening line “breath it”. My goal in this synthesiser was to create an unsettling effect surrounding the intro vocals, introducing experimental elements early in the production.

Noise ES2

This is then followed by a noise ES2 synthesiser, within which I automated an EQ sweep and Volume swell to serve as a transition between sections. This appears throughout.

Drum Synthesiser

I also used the Logic ‘Drum Synth’ to create percussive electronic instruments, to compliment the drum part. I aimed for this part to sound like a sequencer, as the part remains consistent throughout the majority of the song. I added a tape delay to each track set to 16th notes, to add more rhythmic depth to the part.

Atmospheric Sounds

Throughout the track, numerous ES2 synths serve as atmospheric sounds, such as below, which creates the beeping effect heard throughout. I added a Dotted 8th and 32nd note Stereo Delay on both parts, as heard below.

Abstract String Synth

Below is another ES2 which I had originally intended to be a String emulation (hence the initially chosen preset), however this sound quickly evolved into a more atmospheric swelling sound, leading me to add the tremolo plugin to enhance this effect.

Brass Synthesis

There is also a Brass emulation synthesiser, appearing 3/4 of the way through the track. I created this sound by adapting a preset for ‘Analogue Brass’.

Sub Bass

I also created a simple sub bass sound, which is present throughout the majority of the track. My aim within this bass was to simply amplify the low end of the track, whilst adding another electronic element.
