Education and outreach as a euphonium player is an area of the creative industries that has many alleys to branch into. From teaching private lessons, workshops or at schools and universities, to community music programmes and educational content creation such as, online videos and courses. All of which interest me since I have been in contact with each of them at some point throughout my career as an instrumentalist.
In terms of qualifications and experience required to enter a profession in this area of the creative industries, they are undefined. For example, to start my own platform/platforms creating and sharing educational content whether that be on social media or on an online course, there are no qualifications or experience needed as there are no barriers to this line of work. However, the validity to the public eye and therefore the trust in the quality of educational content creation would be compromised without some glaring experience or qualifications in that field that would have customers trust me as an educational source. Which means in order to have a trustworthy and successful platform for viewers, qualifications such as a degree in classical music would be necessary, as this would prove the level, I am able work to, and skill set in my own instrument. And in terms of experience for educational content creation, experience in teaching, even at a minor level, and public speaking would give me the skills required to best educate my viewers. Some examples of elements within these skills would be the ability to structure and execute a lesson plan and communicate it effectively to viewers, so that they are able to not only understand a path for them to improve through my own experience and practices, but also be encouraged and ensured that this path is effective.
Expanding on personal ability and moving to the knowledge, skills, and personal qualities/attributes that are needed to succeed within this profession, there are areas such as technical expertise, a natural ability to rationalise practices to viewers through personal experience teachings (which is something I experience regularly at Leeds Conservatoire so is easy to comprehend needing), a strong knowledge of music theory and knowledge of brass pedagogy which is as Brian Weidner (2020) explains understanding how brass instruments function which helps us to understand how to play and teach them by understanding that brass instruments have a shared set of fundamentals that dictate effective tone production and instruction. Pitch control is an example of pedagogy, along with breathing techniques, embouchure, and articulation. All of which is important knowledge that is needed for success within the educationalcontentcreation profession. Some personal qualities that I will have to show in educational content creation is advanced skills and proficiency in my euphonium abilities, which includes my tone, intonation, and technique. In addition to this I will need to be familiar with the tools at my disposal when compiling and processing my content on social media apps or/and websites of online courses and promotion of my educational content.
Some duties and responsibilities are associated with the profession, most importantly including time management, whereby a schedule of the steps involving planning content, creating content, editing content, uploading content, and managing platforms, should be made and executed in order to have a functioning valuable day of work. This may be in addition to keeping up personal practices to maintain instrumental skills and continuing to gain experience through playing in brass bands and orchestras. Some main duties also involve developing lesson plans for the online courses, developing simple and comprehensive tutorials. In addition to this would be tailoring practice routines for euphoniums players through the ranges of beginner to highly skilled players, in order for my content to have the maximum value to the widest possible audience. This would involve further duties and responsibilities as research is needed to determine the audience’s skill level and requirement for developing their practice routines. Content creation has many underlying responsibilities including the entire production of the content, from recording, editing, and distributing to all social media platforms. Using software is a big part of this, being able to operate editing tools is very important in order to give the content itself and platforms it’s posted on a tailored and professional look, which will in turn bring in and retain the most customers as the content becomes trustworthy. This leads to another main factor, regular uploads. Regular uploads are an important responsibility owed to the viewers as it ensures that engagement stays high which is vital in retaining as stable and income as possible. Another duty owed to the viewers are pieces of sheet music and available copies, as this allows the viewers to print needed resources. These should be organised in a manor that reflects their personal development as an instrumentalist, which makes organisation of content on all platforms vital to the development of the viewers. Extra attention to detail with students is a duty also involved in this profession, whereby I should be able to respond to students queries and provide advice and offer tips on various aspects of their playing such as practice strategies, embouchure, airflow affecting tone and pitching, and correct form whilst playing. These are especially important responsibilities and duties to beginner players as it will significantly affect their development.
In terms of financial and legal issues that may impact this profession, the main aspects are the volatile fluctuations of reliability and regulation on online platforms. For example, on YouTube all content creators must become monetised in order to make money on the platform, this could pose financial issues in the instance that the content creator does not or cannot get monetised on any or all video which renders the hard work and effort put into creating that educational content void, as no money can be made off of it. Another big issue the audience size and audience engagement which can massively vary, especially on social media platforms. This is what makes educational content creation on social media platforms volatile as relying on viewer engagement and retaining that engagement can be unpredictable, especially due to algorithms within social media platforms dictating the push of viewership of videos into the wider public eye based on unpredictable trends. Legal issues combined with financial issues can also pose trouble for educational content creation as a classical euphonium player when copywrite and ownership is considered. This is due to the fact that owning the rights to scores and sheet music more than often involves purchasing it and using sheet music with recordings such as backing tracks without purchasing the rights to them, or ensuring permission, can lead to legal disputes.
Potential marketing and promotional aspects of this profession would involve pushing content on social media on a regular basis. Which means low cost but highly time consuming educational content creation, in mass, in order to gain traction online. It could also involve taking out advert schemes on social media which is significantly cheaper than traditional advertisements such as radio and TV. As Toast, (2024) explains smaller digital channels start around £70 to £180. Which in comparison to social media adverts which charge on engagement could be as Airtasker, (2025) explains between forty pence to £2 per click or/and £4 to £8 per one thousand impressions. Which is significantly more cost effective, in addition to the fact it can provide data on whether viewers of the advert are actively clicking and engaging with it.
In terms of personal challenges and intellectual challenges, there are aspects such as needing an entrepreneurial mindset that the profession presents. Being able to adapt to a constantly hanging online market, and work towards changing needs and wants from viewers drawn towards constantly changing trends. To focus on personal challenges, becoming and educational content creator and starting online courses is a significantly high risk career choice due to the extremely niche nature of the field. A direct example of a personal challenge in this profession would be being able to translate difficult euphonium techniques and practices into consumable and coherent content for viewers, in addition to it being engaging and relevant to their current skill level, may that be beginner or advanced players. This is a challenge that can be dealt with by ensuring not to over-explain simple concepts and be concise when explaining difficult or challenging concepts/practices, in order to retain engagement from the viewers. Another personal challenge would be conducting personal market research. As a one person business this will prove difficult but necessary as to understand the specific content my target viewers need and then tailoring lessons and content towards this. Whether it may be a high influx of significantly skilled musicians required more advanced content or lots beginners looking to start taking up the instrument and needing simple bite size lessons to keep them engaged and interested in the instrument and classical music as a whole surrounding it, including basic theory and general knowledge. This kind of challenge can be dealt with by ensuring that data is processed from social media adverts which is significantly more simple than traditional forms of advertisement and ensuring that a certain time devotion during the average workday is committed towards understanding the customers and viewers wants and needs. Some personal challenges likely to be faced in this profession are time management, as a structured day is vital to being able to stay up to date with the rapid change of digital trends, in addition to balancing practicing and performing to maintain a high level of competence and experience on euphonium. Another personal challenge would be the impending financial pressure especially when starting up, as income can be slow or/and unpredictable. This can be dealt with through ensuring that all educational content posted on all platforms is monetised where possible, through the use of ads during videos, sponsorships, pushing subscriptions to Go Fund Me and similar financial creator support websites.
Some career-progression/development opportunities are available within the profession due to the ability to network with existing educational content creators, especially those with bigger audiences. This allows you as a content creator to join two communities of viewers and customers with similar interests to have the opportunity to explore the other content creators content. This is a mutually beneficial agreement whereby both parties are likely to increase viewership and engagement from the others audience, therefore growing the two platforms. Other basic forms of career development are available such as expanding my portfolio which could involve developing masterclasses for advanced euphonium players for example.
In conclusion the common financial and legal issues under-pinning the creative industries absolutely apply to this profession, in common areas such as kickstarting the career itself and the financial strain that challenges a person. The legal issues also are similar to professions throughout the industry with costs being devoted to ownership and right of music whether that be sheet music or backing tracks, as without this there would likely be legal threat. Furthermore, this profession ties into the current degree and pathway I am on as it would significantly aid the validity of any online courses and educational content creation I may post on social media platforms, since having proved I can work at that top level.
