For my portfolio, I have edited some clips of me playing with The Gulls. I created this work because I want to showcase that I’m a capable session musician able to be dropped into unfamiliar environments and can adapt to them. I chose this method of assessment as I want to be able to use these clips for future use if people enquire about hiring me. On top of this, I wanted to push myself as during my A-Levels I had to do a live performance similar to the one for this assignment, and doing a portfolio felt like learning new skills rather than going over old ones. Context-wise, twelve hours before I moved to Leeds, I got a call from The Gulls asking me to audition and join them. My audition was the festival you see in these clips, which is called Flow In The Forest and is a circus and music festival. In the end, I got the job with The Gulls but chose to stay at university instead, as I want to forge my own musical career as a session player, not be in someone else’s.
