Summary-
My initial idea for this project is to create an app where instrumentalists, producers, songwriters ect, can come together on an app almost designed like a dating app where you can review profiles and make a quick instant first impression decision and swipe right or left whether you look like this person is someone you would like to collaborate with and match with. My USP would be that you can have a Zoom call and talk to each other to further catch a vibe with each other, whether you’d want to work together. Another USP would be that based on your profile, the app can determine people they think you’d be compatible with or if the artist is wanting to jump out of their comfort zone a little and work with people who create and work with opposite genres, they can have this option to widen their choices more. I have explored places like Bandfriend, where this is generated like more of an Instagram, but in my opinion, I would create a more engaging, faster and easier platform for musicians to discover each other on.
USP’s that my app would include:
-Location-based features.
-Live events where musicians can host and let others join to see how they work together even through social media on a screen live and give them all a chance to network with each other and meet new people.
Further description into my buisness-
From further research, my app Collabify Sound fills a gap in the music industry as there is no other easier way to cover, connect and create with other musicians online, as I am aware that there are apps like Band Friend, there no app as quick and easy as mine where it only takes a simple few clicks to connect with others, connecting dating app style swiping for quick connections and LinkedIn style profiles for skilll based matching. You can even add features where you can add your traits and preferences, so you know you’d even be compatible as friends, as it’s not all about the skills you have, but you must be able to work together cohesively and as a team. My target market will be 16-35 years old, but this can be varied to older ages. The age you must be to have the app is 16, as you would be working with older musicians; there will be restrictions put in place and age verifications to confirm this.
Market Research & Analysis–
- Problems– Musicians struggle to find collaborations without using other platforms or networking, unless there are certain events held in person.
- My target audience– Musicians at university or college.
- Independant Artists.
- Producers who are in need of any instrumentalists or vocalists.
- Bands who are looking for new members.
- Competititors– Vampr, SoundBetter, BandMix.
- Opportunity: A quicker and easier app that matches certain skills together, and even as far as personalities, to ensure the music match is compatible in every way.
Marketing Strategy
- Brand Vibe– Modern, artistic, easy to access, but mainly focused on creativity and connection.
- Platforms- TikTok, Instagram (short and quick reels, jams that have taken place), Youtube, partnering up with schools and people who have used Collabify effectively and successfully
- Have a launch campaign which includes having music colleges/universities students test it out and give any feedback, launch a video which explains the app, which encourages them to use it and get it out into the music world.
The product itself and it’s services-
The apps main features:
- Musician Profiles:
- A genre that you/they as an artist prefer to play or are open to playing.
- What instruments you/they play, whether this is just one of several, even if they can only play something a little, it is worth putting any sort of skills on their profile.
- Influences, and what artists they look up to.
- Availability so they can tell if schedules match up with each other.
- Collab preferences.
- Even adding your personal preferences in life and a few things about yourself so you can quickly and easily get to know each other, including any other hobbies you have outside of music.
- Swipe-to-Connect:
- Having Tinder-style profiles, for example, scanning someone’s profiles and swiping left or right to see if you match or not, is an effective and quicker way for music artists to see who they are most compatible with, instead of going through a longer process.
- Also, having the option to search and scan for anyone in your area looking for new musicians to work with, you can have this as an on and off option in case you want to broaden your horizons and work with someone in a different location.
- Having the option to attend live streams where you can connect with people and play for each other, communicate to see if you can catch a vibe.
- Advanced Search:
- Filter by location, genre, skill level, and gear.
- You can optionally filter your settings to someone’s favourite genre, skill level or instrument.
- Project Boards:
- Adding in your bio, eg. “I am looking for an indie vocalist…”
- A tool where you can create yourself an advertisement poster.
- Other Features Include- 121 chat rooms, verified profiles, eg music schools.
Subscription Model:
- Free– Basic swipes, 1 project post, limited chat.
- Pro Tier– (£6.99/month or £60/year): Unlimited swipes, project board access, file sharing, live streaming, unlimited chat.

Summary of my Financial Plan
- My sim for my app is to connect musicians, producers and collaberators through easy, swipe, matchmaking features
- Revenue will be generated through freemium subscriptions, in-app purchases, which would be things like unlocking and paying for a wider location or attending certain special guest livestreams, also possibly advertisement partnerships.
- Key expenses include the app’s development, marketing and staff that I will need to help support my app behind the scenes.
- My goal is to reach break-even within 18-24 months of launch, with revenue growing further after that, hopefully.
My Financial Plan
Startup Costs:
- The apps development: roughly around £12,000
- The Branding & Website: £1,500
- Marketing (the launch + influencers that will promote my app): £3,000
- Legal & Licensing: £1,500
My total estimated cost to start up: £18,000
Revenue Streams:
The way I will increase revenue streams is by:
- Monthly subscriptions for those who would like to have access to new and special features.
- Institutional subscriptions (for music schools).
- Paid project promotions so that my app can be seen by an even broader audience, even by this, it could encourage someone who is even a beginner to join the app to connect with other musicians, so they can learn more about music and the industry networks.
- Event partnerships (LinkUp Jam Nights with music brands or other artists, underground or even mainstream).
Break-Even Target:
- ~1,200 PRO users within 12–15 months.
- My goal is to have sustainable growth through users’ word of mouth, so more people discover my app.
Legal & Ethical Consideration
- Privacy and data security, especially under UK GDPR and GDPR for UK and EU users.
- Community guidelines are put in place and moderation is implemented so there is no harassment or spam, and if detected, these will be banned from the app after 3 warnings.
- Age verification to ensure that you are 16 or over the use this app, this is put in place especially for younger users as they will be on the app with older users.
- You can also have the chance to video stream to assure the person is legit, or not trying or is not going to steal any of your original ideas that you present to them.
How group work helped me work and devlop my idea:
Working on a business plan for a musician match-making app was a great experience, but especially incorporating and adding group work, this was incredibly impactful and helpful. Not only was I able to refine the actual idea, but it also improved the overall quality of my plan through collaboration and feedback from my other peers with contrasting expertise.
One of the most important parts of the group work was the great diversity in perspectives and opinions as each member brought unique insights, opinions and experiences which made the planning process a lot more thorough for me. For example, one person I asked had a strong backgroundd in music production, another with a small amount of marketing experience and financial advising for me and even this alone was enough to help me put our strenghts together and address important areas for my buisness plan more thoroughly than I could have been able to do by myself. This collaboration allowed me to see my app from different perspectives, for example, musicians, producers and even just casual music lovers, which helped me shape a more inclusive and effective concept for my product.
Brainstorming in group work also sparked creativity. Initially, at the beginning of the project, my app was as simple as a platform that connected musicians who needed a new member, or just to connect with musicians with similar tastes in music. However, through group discussions, I expanded this idea to include certain features like location-based searching, live streaming, and Tinder-like match-making. These additions that I decided to include made my concept more competitive and unique, and fit into market demands. I was able to realise and understand the need for a stronger, more unique selling point (USP), which then further led to my personalised algorithm that could recommend musical artists together based on their preferred genre, artists and creative preferences by just a few easy swipes.
The feedback process in group work was also particularly valuable. By presenting all of my ideas to peers, I was able to identify any weaknesses within my plan and any things that I had not included or could never on even more. Sometimes I found myself being way too focused on creative aspects, as that was the part I found more enticing and fun, instead of also focusing on financial and logistical challenges, which at times I found myself overlooking. In group work, important questions were asked, which then further pushed me to think even more critically about budget estimates and potential revenue streams.
Overall, group work helped me improve my collaboration and communication skills. This is because I had to present my idea clearly in a way that everyone would understand, and not just myself. I also had to actively listen and note feedback that was given to me and constructively incorporate any new suggestions. These are essential skills which are not only used to complete a business plan, but also for running a startup business in the real world, where teamwork and adaptability are crucial.
In conclusion, group work played a critical role in shaping and strengthening my business plan for my music matchmaking app, Collabify, as the collaborative environment provided valuable feedback and ensured my plan was realistic and ready for potential development or investment.
