The journey of music production is a collaborative endeavour that brings together diverse talents, skills, and perspectives to create a harmonious final product. In this production log, I will document the intricate processes and collaborative efforts that went into the creation of the tracks for our studio portfolio. This log serves to provide a comprehensive overview of the production stages, from initial concept development to the final mastering of each track, highlighting my individual contributions and the teamwork that made it all possible.
The role of a music producer is multifaceted, encompassing the creative, technical, and managerial aspects of music creation. Throughout this project, I have had the opportunity to work closely with my production group and a variety of musicians, each bringing their unique artistry and expertise to the table. Effective teamwork and open communication have been crucial in navigating the challenges and seizing the opportunities presented during the production process. As a member of the production group, I took on specific responsibilities and contributed to the overall vision and execution of the project.
This production log is structured to provide detailed insights into each phase of the production process. It begins with pre-production activities, including brainstorming sessions, planning, and initial meetings with the musicians. It then moves on to the recording sessions, where the real magic happens, capturing the raw performances that form the foundation of our tracks.
The evidence of collaboration is woven throughout this log, demonstrating how each member of the group played a vital role in the success of the project. By detailing my contributions and the collective efforts of the team, this log aims to meet the learning outcomes and provide a clear picture of the production journey. The pattern provided for this assignment has been used as a guideline, with modifications made to suit the specific needs and dynamics of our project.
Pre-Production Phase:
The pre-production phase is crucial in ensuring a smooth and successful live recording session. It involves extensive planning, coordination, and preparation to address all potential challenges. Our initial step was to select which songs and bands we will be live recording and what studio room we will use to record in.
Firstly, we made an online group chat, so it was accessible for everyone to contact each other. We then booked a meeting room in the library and scheduled a meeting where we discussed our pre-production plan. We came to a group decision that we will record “Here Comes the Sun,” by the Beatles. We also made the decision to record Ollie and Ben’s band “Cab Driver” for the overdubbed production. This was a great decision for us as Ben and Ollie are both in our production group. We also discussed which songs for the overdubbed recording we will record, we all decided on their original song and a cover by the “Strokes.” As all our classes had been in studio 422, we decided that this studio would be the best suited for us as have been working with the studio’s desk and feel more comfortable in this studio.
Next, we scheduled meetings with Cab Driver to discuss the setlist and arrangements. It was essential to understand their vision and ensure that the technical aspects of the recording would align with their artistic goals. We also conducted another site visit to the studio to assess the acoustics, layout, and available equipment. This allowed us to plan the microphone placements and determine any additional gear we might need to rent from the music hub.
Equipment Setup:
On the day of the recording, we arrived at studio 422 early to set up the equipment. Our gear included a multi-track recorder, various microphones (dynamic, condenser, and ribbon), mic stands, cables, and a mixing desk. We strategically placed microphones beside the amps to capture the best possible sound from each instrument and the overall ambiance of the studio. From one of our previous classes, we learned where to place microphones when they are next to an amp and how it makes a different sound depending on where the mic placement is.
We used an acoustic guitar and electric guitar and a bass guitar. We then also recorded Ben’s vocals for “Here Comes the Sun.”
For the overdubbed recording we were able to record drums, guitar, bass, and vocals. For the drums, we used a combination of close mics on each drum and overhead mics to capture the cymbals and room sound. The guitars and bass were recorded using dynamic microphones which we placed beside the amps. Vocals were captured using high-quality condenser microphones, positioned to minimize bleed from other instruments.

Sound Check and Rehearsal:
A thorough sound check was conducted to balance the levels and ensure that each microphone was capturing the desired sound. We worked closely with the musicians and each other during this process, adjusting based on their feedback and our observations. This step was vital in identifying and resolving any technical issues before the actual recording began. There were moments where we found it difficult to receive any input to the studio’s desk and later found out that there was a setting disabled on Pro Tools.
Following the sound check, we conducted a full rehearsal of the set. This allowed Cab Driver to get comfortable with the setup and provided us with an opportunity to make any final adjustments. We recorded the rehearsal as a backup and to review the performance and sound quality. This was the same process for our live recorded version for Here Comes the Sun. We conducted a rehearsal for Ollie’s acoustic guitar as this was the first instrument we were recording and wanted to make sure the sound quality was good.
Our recording sessions were meticulously planned to ensure efficiency and high-quality output. We started by setting up the studio environment, which included arranging the necessary microphones, instruments, and other equipment. We worked together to position the microphones optimally for each instrument and vocal setup. This involved using diverse types of microphones like condenser mics for vocals and dynamic mics for drums to capture the best sound quality.

Before recording, we conducted sound checks for each musician. This step was crucial for adjusting levels and ensuring that there were no technical issues. We aimed to create a comfortable atmosphere for the musicians, providing them with headphones for monitoring and making sure they were satisfied with the mix they were hearing.

During the actual recording, we focused on capturing multiple takes of each track. This allowed us to choose the best performance or even combine parts of different takes to create a flawless last version. I closely monitored the recordings, providing feedback to the musicians and making real-time adjustments to the mix. This included tweaking the levels, adjusting the EQ, and applying compression to achieve a balanced sound. We also paid attention to the acoustics of the recording space. To minimize unwanted noise and reflections, we used acoustic panels and isolation booths. This helped in capturing clean and professional-sounding recordings. Throughout the sessions, I maintained detailed notes on each take.

The live recording session was an exhilarating experience, capturing the energy and spontaneity of the musicians’ performance. When it came to the overdubbed recording, we recorded multiple takes of each song to ensure we had enough material to work with during the post-production phase. Throughout the session, we monitored the recordings closely, making real-time adjustments to the levels and microphone placements as needed.
Communication with the band was key during the recording. We provided them with feedback and encouragement, helping them to deliver their best performances. There was a moment when we found it difficult to receive any vocals from the booth and realised that the cable in the patch was broken. When recording the live version of Here fomes the Sun we recorded multiple takes of each guitar, bass, and vocal sessions. The atmosphere was collaborative and supportive, fostering a creative environment that was conducive to capturing authentic and emotive performances.
Overall, the recording sessions were a blend of technical precision and creative collaboration. By fostering a supportive environment and utilizing our technical knowledge, we were able to capture the essence of the musicians’ performances.
I found that recording in the studio is a complex yet rewarding process that combines technical expertise with artistic creativity. Each session is a unique experience, tailored to the specific needs of the project and the artists involved. From the initial setup to the final take, I found that every step is crucial in capturing the best possible sound. The meticulous planning and preparation that go into setting up the studio environment ensure that the technical aspects are well-managed, allowing the artists to focus solely on their performance. The sound checks and adjustments made during this phase are essential for achieving a balanced and high-quality recording. The end result is a testament to the hard work and dedication of everyone involved, capturing the essence of the music, and bringing it to life for the listeners. I really enjoyed working with my group as there was effective communication and great teamwork.
