Process Assessment Portfolio
This portfolio will critically analyse my development within Actor & Text and reflects upon my evolving process as an actor when developing a character. It focuses on two key elements of Stanisvalski’s methodology and examines how these techniques have been applied to practical work in various scripts in class. Through critical evaluation of rehearsal and performance experiences, this portfolio identifies both strengths and improvements in my current practice and considers how future developments can strengthen my authenticity and naturalism when performing a character.
Stanislavski system
Konstantin Stanislavski was a Russian theatre practitioner in the 20th century who developed a method known as The System. This approach allows actors to explore characters in depth and supports naturalistic performances. Core components of The System are Given circumstances (explored through the seven questions), the magic If, and the identification of objectives. The system is particularly important to me as an actor, it enables me to create naturalistic characters grounded in believable lives experience.
Given Circumstances
Given circumstances, refer to the specific conditions surrounding a character, including factual information provided by the text and contextual details that can be logically inferred. These circumstances inform both character development and the wider world of the play.
Stanislavski proposes seven key questions to analyse given circumstances:
Who am I? – This concerns the character’s identity, including age, social status, nationality, personality traits, and relationships.
Where am I? – The geographical and social setting of the play (for example, Road by Jim Cartwright is set on a road in an unnamed town in Lancashire).
When is it? – The historical period, season, and specific time in which the action occurs.
What do I want? – The character’s objective within the scene.
Why do I want it? – The motivation underpinning the objective.
How will I get it? – The actions or tactics employed to achieve the objective.
What must I overcome? – The obstacles or conflicts that prevent the objective from being achieved.
An example of when I have used the questions was when we worked on a scene from Romeo and Juliet.

I found the concept of given circumstances particularly helpful in grounding my performance in clear specific choices rather than general emotion. It helped develop a clearer understanding of the world through my characters eyes. As part of my acting process, I approached given circumstances as the second step after first reading the script to get a sense of rhythm, tone and narrative. Once I had a broad understanding of the text, systematically asking the seven questions allows to me move beyond surface level interpretation and it explored who my character is at the core. Most significantly, the obstacles my character would have to overcome made my actions more active and personal rather than just expressing emotion. Overall, working with given circumstances helped connect truth and detail when performing the character and had the writers intentions at the forefront of my interpretation. I have since applied this approach in other rehearsal processes in both actor and text and in acting through song. It provides a clear and stricter method for developing a character. I intend to continue using given circumstances as it ensures my work is authentically text based.
Objective & Actions
In Stanislavski’s system, objectives & actions refer to determining what a character wants (objective) and performing specific, physical tasks to achieve it. Once this work has been completed it allows you to make acting choices more specifically a characters emotional choices and tactics. Determining objectives and actions is most efficient after work on given circumstances because you have the world of the character and play, now you can start having agency to make choices.
