Production Log

This production log documents my creative, technical, and collaborative working process across three different types of musical recording, I completed these using Logic Pro because I’m most familiar with the DAW, two of the tracks were recorded in a studio environment and the last track was remixed at home. The module has enabled me to build upon my studio skills, while further refining my skill through live recording, performance capture, remixing, and independent mixing practice.

Each track required a different production method, ranging from live band, which were recording an original track and we had to use different microphone placements to capture the sound. Then we had a performance-based ensemble, which we chose jazz. Then an individually produced remix. Across all three, I engaged with the holistic studio production process, including planning, recording, editing, mixing, collaboration, and evaluation. The project also allowed me to explore a broad range of musical genres while applying strong organisational, interpersonal, and time management skills.

Track 1 –

Original Composition – Live Band Performance

Pre-Production & Planning

Track one focused on capturing the foundations of an original band performance from a live perspective. During pre-production, we worked closely with the band to understand the song’s structure, tempo, and stylistic references. This process helped establish a shared artistic vision and ensured the musicians were well prepared prior to entering the studio.

We created a Logic Pro session in advance, including labelled tracks, where the verses and choruses started, groups for drums, guitars, and vocals. This preparation allowed the session to run efficiently and demonstrated effective organisational and time management skills.

Recording Process

The rhythm section—drums, bass, guitar, and guide vocals—was tracked live together to preserve the energy and interaction of a real band performance. Studio layout was carefully considered such as using different microphone placements and also to maintain sight-lines and communication between musicians e.g. when to start and keeping in time with the drummer, supporting performance unity.

Microphone placement techniques developed from our previous sessions were applied, particularly on the drum kit and guitar amplifiers. We focused on gain staging and signal clarity because as this was an unedited performance we couldn’t use any corrective processors. In line with the brief, we did not quantise or time-stretch the full band performance, prioritising musical feel over technical perfection.

Overdubs & Production

Following the live recorded session, additional bass parts and backing vocals were overdubbed. Logic Pro’s comping tools were used carefully to assemble strong performances without any editing. Drum replacement and triggering were applied subtly to enhance impact and consistency while maintaining the natural dynamics of the original recording.

Collaboration & Reflection

I worked effectively with others by maintaining clear communication using social media and encouraging feedback from band members. Creative decisions were discussed openly, allowing the final production to reflect the band and our artistic identity as producers. This track strengthened my confidence in managing live band sessions and reinforced the importance of preparation due to my last year recordings that felt last minute.

Track 2 – Live Jazz

In-Studio Performance Capture

Pre-Production & Session Planning

Track two required a contrasting approach, as it involved a live jazz ensemble performance with a minimum of three musicians and no overdubs were permitted. The focus was on production planning, microphone placement, acoustic control, and session management.

We planned the session carefully, considering room acoustics, musician positioning, and microphone selection. A clean Logic Pro session was set up with nothing added to it to ensure truthful capture of the ensemble’s sound.

Recording Process

The ensemble performed together in real time, and the recording focused on natural balance and musical interaction. Microphone placement was critical in achieving clarity while allowing appropriate bleed between instruments, which is stylistically suitable for jazz as they used to use one microphone before spotlighting was even made an option.

No replacement or editing was used. Instead, we relied on capturing strong performances and addressing issues at the recording stage rather than in post-production. Acoustic screens and room positioning were used to control spill and resonance from the brass sections.

Collaboration & Session Management

Strong interpersonal skills were essential during this session. We ensured musicians felt comfortable and understood the recording process, allowing time for warm-ups and rehearsal. Clear communication helped maintain focus and efficiency, as performances could not be heavily edited later.

Reflection

This track significantly developed my confidence in performance-based recording and reinforced the importance of listening and preparation. It highlighted the value of technical decision-making during recording rather than relying on DAW-based correction.

Track 3 – Remix

Vocal A Cappella-Based New Composition

Concept & Pre-Production

Track three was an individually produced remix based on a provided vocal a cappella, treated as a completely new composition rather than a traditional remix of the original. I chose to complete this track in Logic Pro, allowing consistency with my workflow across the project as this is the DAW I am most comfortable with.

The first stage involved analysing the vocal’s phrasing, tone and tempo. Since I had to show my sampling skills and knowledge of the techniques I planned a new structure and arrangement using synthesis, guitars and drums that would support the vocal while making use of as much of the original material as possible. This process demonstrated creative decision-making and compositional awareness making sure that everything was in time and actually fit well with the rest of the track.

Production & Arrangement

I built the track from the backing outward, establishing tempo and harmonic content that complemented the vocal performance. The remix was structured with clear sampling techniques using quick sample and manually chopping up the vocal as well as pitching it up and down, swell as speeding it up and slowing it down to ensure an engaging arrangement.

In line with the brief, I recorded two original audio instruments into the arrangement. These included (e.g. guitar and bass / synth and percussion), which I performed myself. Recording these parts allowed me to integrate live musical elements into an otherwise production-led track, bridging studio recording skills with creative composition.

Editing & Sound Design

Logic Pro was used extensively for editing, arrangement, and sound design. Vocal editing focused on clarity and consistency while preserving the character of the original performance. Creative processing such as delay, reverb, and modulation effects was applied to enhance atmosphere, I used three types of reverb and two types of delay that I used on auxiliary tracks and it also gave me corrective use of the stereo field.

Mixing & Individual Reflection

As an individual, I mixed the track to best represent the brief and the ideas stuck in my head. This involved balancing the vocal against the instrumental choices, managing low-end clarity, and ensuring the mix plays the same across different playback systems. I applied EQ for example I used a low-cut on the vocals to create a head space for the kick and bass, compression to add thickness to the vocal allowing me to layer, and automation to change the volume and also to fade the vocal in and out and change the panning from side to side, this also gave me creative freedom to show my sampling skills.

This track demonstrated my ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and take full responsibility for creative and technical decisions. It represents a significant step in developing my personal sampling skills for later production projects.

Overall Reflection on Production Practice & Teamwork

Across all three tracks, I demonstrated strong organisational and time management skills. I adapted my role depending on the project requirements and also my groups requirements e.g. time spent in the studio out of lessons, leading collaborative sessions when necessary and working independently when required.

The project allowed me to work across a broad range of genres and production approaches that I wouldn’t usually use, reinforcing both my technical abilities and creative confidence when working with others. Using Logic Pro throughout allowed me to work quick enough to fit a deadline which other DAW wouldn’t allow that flexibility.

Overall, this assignment has enabled me to show creative, technical, and practical skills in a stand out way and has significantly contributed to my development as a music producer within a studio-based environment.
