“Improv is really cool” – Joe Brown
This improv warmup is called mind meld, it is one of my favourite improv warmups. It is a very simple game that has the benefit of getting a group connected and it turns them into more of an ensamble. Here is a video my class doing it.
Mind meld works by having a circle of improvisers and two walk into the circle. They then on the count of 3 say a word together. Their goal is the say the same word, they do not react to the words said and walk back to the circle and two more swap them out and repeat until the same word is said. If a mind meld happens you sing the song, “We did a mind meld, we did a mind meld. We said the same word, we said the same word”.
This is the exercise.
We were able to get a mind meld after 6 minutes. This wasn’t very good but was a lot of fun which is always good to get the mood of the ensamble up. I taught this group mind meld only 10 minutes ago, if the group were to do more sessions together then we would be much better and more in tune with each other. Now that we have done it we will use it for every improv session as it is a fun game that works very well with getting the energy up
