Synthesis Process
I decided I wanted to use synthesis to help give my kick drum some more low end, as after recording the live drums, I felt it was lacking in that respect. In order to do this, I used the ES2 synth in Logic, to create this sound through a sine wave and tuning it an octave down. I used a low-pass filter, to get rid of any clicks in the higher frequencies, as the Kick In microphone picked this up from the drum beater. I just wanted the low end.
Bouncing this audio file from Logic to Pro Tools, I used a noise gate on the synth, which would open only when the live kick drum was played. Although I wanted a kick sound, I kept the sustain really high, so the note would last longer and then it would always be ready to be triggered through the noise gate.
