Synthesis process evidence

  • I used a compressor on the scratch demo vocals as to mix them and make them sound well blended with the rest of the song. The threshold was set to -20db to reduce any unwanted noise and I assisted this concept further by using a de-esser for any immediate plosives and strong “S” sounds in the audio.
  • I used reverb (the “chromaverb” processor) on many of the individual tracks as the idea of this pop song was to have a strong atmosphere and build. But this was particularly evident when I used it in the chopped vocals for the pre-chorus. This created aa natural echo that thickened the sound and created an ambience for just before the chorus.
  • during the initial stages of producing the track I knew I liked the idea of ‘repetition’, whether that be through chopped vocal samples, or an arpeggiator or the classic ‘copy and paste’ method. However, for the two bass parts, I used an arpeggiator to have an underlying repetition to create a feel for the overall concept.
  • the chopped vocal samples I created for the pre are stacked and layered, with one of the tracks having a ‘vocal transformer’ on it (set to -12 on both ‘pitch’ and ‘format’) creating a lower, almost robotic yet harmonic layer to the sound. This idea transformed the whole demo and I really felt it start to come together. I also panned the layered vocals to fill the sound.
  • I also used automation on all the tracks to mix and alter dynamics at different sections and balance everything alongside altering the strength and dampenss of the reverb and delay at different points of the song.
