Supporting Commentary
This Electronic Press Kit was created to promote the CamUKG project as a Leeds based UK Garage DJ and producer. The purpose of the EPK is to create a clear artistic identity for CamUKG whilst showing the commercial awareness and strategies used regarding audience engagement.
This project was influenced by the recent resurgence growth of UK Garage within mainstream and underground music scenes, particularly through artists such as Sammy Virji and Interplanetary Criminal. The EPK combines visual branding, audience targeting and promotional planning to support the positioning of CamUKG within the club and festival market.
Artistic Identity & Branding
The branding for CamUKG was designed to reflect the energetic and underground nature of both the UK Garage and UK underground scene. The visual identity is inspired by nightclub lighting and rave culture, which is common for UK Garage artists.
Dark visual tones with neon blue imprints are linked with UK Garage events. This particular colour palette was inspired by promotional material used by Sammy Virji, one of the leading artists in the UK Garage scene. The minimal logo was created for a clean and professional approach for digital platforms.
The project also aimed to establish CamUKG within the Leeds nightlife culture. Leeds has a strong nightlife culture, with students involved, underground clubs and independent DJ events increasing the popularity of electronic music in Leeds and in CamUKG’s target market.
The branding for CamUKG was designed to appeal to a younger audience, who mainly consume content through platforms such as TikTok, Instagram and YouTube. Eye-catching, fast paced content is what works best for this target market.
Finally, the branding decisions were also influenced by current trends within UK Garage. Inspiration was taken from top artists such as Conducta, Oppidan and more.
Audience & Market
The primary target audience for CamUKG are listeners aged between 18-30 with interests in UK Garage, underground electronic music and nightlife culture. This target audience often hear the UK Garage sound through streaming platforms, festivals, nightlife events or social media.
UK Garage has grown significantly in popularity during these past few years, this is mainly through platforms such as TikTok, Instagram and YouTube exposing younger audience to the UK Garage culture.
The project has also considered how important the Leeds student population and their impact on the nightlife scene is. Student events provide opportunities for networking and increasing audience. Leeds has an active nightlife which makes it suitable for promoting a UK Garage artists brand.
Many young listeners now discover artists through short form video content rather than traditional radio or other traditional methods. Audiences consuming electronic music online often expect frequent content uploads and consistent interaction from artists.
After researching artists such as Sammy Virji, DJ EZ and Oppidan, these artists use high energy DJ clips to increase audience engagement. The viewer of these clips will see the energy and enjoyment the crowd is having and want to get involved in the next event. Research also shows how important consistency is on these online platforms.
Technology has significantly changed the way independent artists promote themselves within the modern music industry. Anyone can get music production software as it is so affordable now. This is the same with social media, which allows emerging artists to easily create and share content without financial investment.
Live performance plays a significant role within UK Garage culture due to audience interaction and DJ energy being such important aspects of the genres appeal. Where some genres rely on releases, UK Garage artists often build reputations through live sets and performances. For CamUKG, live performances provide opportunities to increase audience engagement and build a reputation within the nightlife scene. The recording of these live sets and crowd reactions are great for social media promotion, it is content that appears authentic and energetic. This shows the trend within electronic music marketing, where audiences are drawn to performance experiences rather than traditional advertising campaigns.
Marketing & Promotion Strategy
The marketing strategy for CamUKG focuses mainly on digital platforms, this is due to how important social media is in music culture at the moment. Platforms such as TikTok, Instagram and YouTube allow for direct contact for audience and the creator which allows to create a connection and community.
The primary marketing platform for this promotion strategy was TikTok, this is due to the viral exposure that some of these short form clips can create. Uploading short clips of mixes, unreleased tracks and crowd reactions can increase audience engagement.
On the other hand, Instagram is a platform usually used for promoting event flyers and show highlights. Instagram reels is where the short form content usually gets placed.
Distribution platforms are also very important within the underground electronic music culture. Spotify is the main platform used within the UK Garage scene for music discovery and playlisting. Whereas Soundcloud is used more due to its accessibility for independent artists as it’s a lot easier to upload a track on Soundcloud in comparison to Spotify.
The CamUKG project also discovered how important local DJ Sets at student nights and underground club venues would be when it came to building credibility and growing an audience.
The final method of expanding the audience reach was collaboration. Working with photographers, videographers, DJs and promoters allowed the project to be seen by more and more people.
Leeds Music Scene & Regional Identity
The decision to market CamUKG as a Leeds based artist was important in creating a regional identity. Leeds have such a strong reputation for student nightlife, underground music and independent club culture, making it a suitable environment for a UK Garage artist brand. The association of the project with a Northern city also allows a differentiation for CamUKG from London UK Garage sterotypes. Finally, also making the artist seem more authentic, as audiences often value local music and independent creative artists.
Leeds student culture also influenced the development of the CamUKG brand because the university nightlife plays such a major role in the city’s electronic music scene. This influenced the focus on energetic visuals and social media marketing. By targeting this audience, the project becomes more commercially realistic.
Commercial & Professional Considerations
The project of CamUKG was created whilst considering the artistic identity and commercial sustainability. For CamUKG, revenue would come from DJ bookings, streams, merchandise and branded events.
Streaming platforms such as Spotify and Soundcloud allow for audience growth. On the other hand, the financial returns are usually low for independent artists. Showing DJ performances would be the main source of income.
Throughout the project, copyright and licensing were considered. In the UK Garage scene, production usually includes some sort of vocal sampling/remixing. It is important for artists to understand the copyright law in order to avoid legal issues when it comes to sampling.
Another important commercial factor was networking, building relationships with promoters, videographers and other DJs was a key method for improving booking opportunities and audience exposure. Collaborative projects also help artists access new audiences through shared promotion and cross platform engagement. Specifically within UK Garage culture, collaboration has always played an important role in building communities and sustaining and growing local scenes.
The electronic music industry has a very competitive nature, there is thousands of DJs and producers that compete for the viral moments online. This is why strong branding and consistently putting content out is essential. Independent artists can now releases music globally without requiring any label support, this increases opportunity but also creates market saturation. Standing out within a crowded digital environment requires audience awareness and constant online engagement.
Although, there are many challenges for DJs and producers, the popularity of UK Garage means there are realistic opportunities for independent artists to have sustainable careers through these digital promotion methods and live performance.
Reflection
Overall, the Electronic Press Kit clearly shows the artistic identity influenced by UK Garage culture and Leeds nightlife. One strong aspect of the project, is the consistency between the visual branding, target audience and promotional strategy.
The project reflects the current trends within the marketing of electronic music, this is through the use of short form content and performance videos. The research into Sammy Virji and DJ EZ helped me understand these promotional strategies and how the top artists are using them.
Understanding the audience demographics and digital music culture is another strength of this project. The marketing strategy reflects that streaming and social media platforms are the main ways that younger audiences consume music.
On the other hand, the project also has some weaknesses, the first one being the lack of data and analytics due to the artist brand still developing.
The project could also be improved by more advanced graphic design. The branding concept is strong, but higher quality visual assets would improve the EPK.
During peer discussions and workshops, the idea of maintaining consistency across all platforms was consistently mentioned when it came to growing an audience.
Overall, the project demonstrates the artistic creativity and commercial awareness within the UK Garage industry. This EPK promotes CamUKG as an emerging Leeds based electronic music artist whilst identifying growth opportunities for the future.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the CamUKG Electronic Press Kit was designed to reflect a professional and commercially aware artist within the UK Garage scene. The project combines audience research, branding and promotional planning to represent the CamUKG brand.
The supporting commentary shows how the creative and commercial decisions were influenced by current music industry trends and strategies. With influence coming from artists such as Sammy Virji and DJ EZ, the creative direction of the CamUKG project stayed relevant to the modern UK Garage culture.
