Bella Allen- Specialist Study

by

For my specialist study project, I thought of taking 80’s rock/pop songs that I love and reimagining them in a disco/pop/funk genre from backing tracks I discovered. The 1980s rock/pop era was full of bold and powerful energy with raw emotion, but here I saw an opportunity to highlight the groove and melodic potential that often sat beneath the surface. I wanted to see how the mood and feel of the song can be adapted. My creative intention was not to replicate but to reimagine, to honour the original music while allowing it to fall into a new genre. I love the contrast between the gritty, rebellious nature of 1980s rock and, on the other hand, the joyful, hypnotic essence of disco and synth pop music. Overall, it was about giving these iconic songs a new voice that invites movement and transends through the new modern, feel-good production. Finally, I chose to perform a cover of I wanna dance with Somebody by Whitney Houston, so that I was able to capture the genre I am trying to create in my adaptations and match this feel, so I had more of an idea of where I was going.
