Supporting Commentary
As a creative singer and performer in the early stage of my career, I have created this electronic press kit (EPK) to establish a clear, credible and eye-catching digital image. The purpose is to showcase my experience, artistic style and services to event organizers, partners and potential fans, and to allow them to immediately feel my musical philosophy and performance value. I hope to have more live performance opportunities outside of school during my study life so that I can make progress in these activities. However, to attract these clients, creating an EPK is very important for me. Firstly, an EPK represents a professional declaration, meaning I am transitioning from a “singing enthusiast” to a “professional musician”. An EPK can gather all valuable information about me, and it supports continuous updates. Even if my resume changes in the future, I can showcase my growth through the EPK. I don’t need to reorganize my materials every time I introduce myself to others. It can be conveniently displayed on the Internet and attached to performance applications or emails to potential clients. With the development of the Internet and the widespread use of social media, an EPK as an electronic digital image has great promotional power. People from all over the world on the Internet could be my potential clients. Such influence far exceeds real-world promotion. Secondly, listeners from the Internet are also likely to be attracted by my works and become my fans, which will help me increase my fan base and influence on the Internet. Becoming famous is the lifelong pursuit and goal of every singer. Therefore, I choose to create an EPK to help me achieve my purpose.
My EPK covers my early music education, performance style and experience to establish my musical image. It also introduces my collaboration history, competition and performance experience to promote my abilities. Mentioning audience feedback and social media achievements can provide clients with the most authentic feedback. Introducing the services I can provide can help me more effectively target the audience. The association method can facilitate effective communication between me and the clients. Promotional pictures, videos and accounts can better attract target clients and allow them to have a more intuitive understanding of my abilities. Concise and organized information can also enable clients to quickly assess whether I am suitable for their specific needs.
In this EPK, I believe there are still many areas that need improvement. For example, in my past resume, I have no international professional competition experience or grade certificates, which may make clients question my professionalism. Therefore, I plan to participate in auditions for shows like Britain’s Got Talent and take the Trinity singing examination in the future. Secondly, I don’t have much stage experience because I am a first-year student. In the past, my age did not allow me to participate in for-profit work, and I didn’t have much time to focus on music performances. So, I hope to have the opportunity to perform in various activities every year in the future to enrich my performance experience. I also plan to complete my original songs and publish them. This is an opportunity to receive critical feedback from the audiences and also allows clients to refer to my originality, helping me meet clients with demands for original music.
The promotional pictures in my EPK are from a performance I gave at a bar. These photos were taken by a professional photographer and have high clarity. In the picture, I’m holding a microphone and singing naturally. The simplicity of the background and my outfit, along with the unified color tone, highlight my preference for pop and ballad style music, which can better help me attract people who are looking for singers with this style. For the promotional video, I chose a performance video taken by the venue of another show. This was the most professional and largest-scale performance I led my band to complete. The fixed camera angle clearly shows all the members of our band, allowing clients to have a good understanding of our band’s overall situation. This perspective also captures the audience below, and I want to leave the impression that we are seen by many people, thereby indirectly highlighting our ability and influence. The content of the video is a cover of a J-pop rock song, aiming to attract people with similar style preferences. Both the pictures and the video are mainly in black tones. Although there are differences in makeup and styling, the overall color tone is unified, and the simple layout still conforms to professional aesthetics.
Compared to Instagram, both can be updated in real time, but the EPK is more formal and suitable for introducing myself to professionals. It is more professional in terms of format, layout, and text description, and clients can directly access it to extract useful information. Instagram, on the other hand, is more focused on social interaction and has a very wide audience, making it easy to encounter clients who are interested in me and to receive genuine feedback from viewers.
I referred to the EPKs of singers Katie Ferrara and Mikki Evans, who have a similar style to me. Their text sections are divided into three parts, introducing their personal background, music style, performance experience, and album information. They also included their original music tracks and promotional pictures and finally provided contact information at the end. The entire EPK is simple and clear, covering all useful information. So, I adopted a similar style and format. I also referred to the promotional pictures used in Emma Saville’s EPK. She used real performance photos, and I think the advantage of this is that it can quickly let others know that you are a singer. So, I followed her example and added a similar style photo. What impressed me in her EPK was that the pictures used a lot of blue to achieve a unified color tone, which overall conformed to professional aesthetics.
The primary function of my EPK is to serve as a professional portfolio that connects me with performance opportunities, bookings, and creative collaborations. EPK allows potential audiences to quickly assess my fit. As such, it plays a direct role in generating revenue streams through paid gigs and private events. Building a professional EPK requires financial investment. The promotional pictures and videos I put in the EPK are from my real performances. The purpose is to let clients see my past professional performance experience. I didn’t pay for the venue for the performances in the promotional pictures, but I hired a photographer to take high-quality solo photos, which cost about 100 pounds. Since my band is not very famous yet, we have to invest in holding a live house performance ourselves. This includes a venue fee of 3,000 pounds and 200 pounds for a photographer to shoot videos. In addition, I also spent about 200 pounds on promoting the band and performance time on social media platforms.
As an emerging artist, protecting my creative output is essential. I am aware of the importance of copyright for my original compositions and arrangements, and I intend to register them formally as my catalogue grows. In the future, I may explore trademarking my artist’s name and logo to ensure brand consistency across digital platforms and protect against imitation.
Evidence of Group Work and Evaluation
At first, I didn’t know what an EPK was, so I discussed it with my team. A student majoring in classical piano gave me a lot of inspiration. Taking his EPK as an example, this document requires concise language to cover the promotional content about oneself, such as your resume, past experiences, performance experience, and awards received. Another student with the same major as me told me that my EPK needs to attract the attention of a specific group, such as the fans I want to attract attention to, or the clients I want to achieve cooperation with. Then we discussed its style. Someone suggested that making the EPK in a clean, modern, and minimalist style would make it easier for clients to focus on your content and better highlight our advantages and image. We planned to use a basic, unified color scheme and eye-catching promotional pictures as the main design, combined with concise text. We analyzed the EPKs of some artists online and found that most of them describe themselves in a three-paragraph structure, and this format is also easier to arouse our reading interest. So, in my EPK, I also used three paragraphs, which is enough to include all the useful resumes and information. When discussing how to present the EPK, someone suggested using ‘bandzoogle.com’ to create your own promotional website, which would attract more people to visit, and someone suggested using Canvas to make a poster-like promotional picture, which would make it easier to recommend yourself as an electronic business card to the target customers. Additionally, after discussing with another student with the same major, he told me that his mother, as a singer, had participated in singing performances at party-type events. I thought this was a new performance opportunity, so I included this type of job-seeking information in my EPK. Of course, I had also mentioned my campus, bar live performances, and live streaming experiences. Now, although I have understood the role and importance of the EPK, I still don’t have enough ability to make the EPK professional and exquisite. My personal experience is also not rich enough. In the future, I hope I can learn to use tools like Canvas to improve the design quality and participate in more performance-related activities.
