An Electronic Press Kit (EPK) “should fully reflect the unique quality of your work and reinforce the fact that your music is extraordinary and worth listening to” (Musicians’ Union, 2024). It is “the go-to resource for music industry professionals who work with artists, or who want to find out about new artists.” (Record Union, n.d.). An EPK serves a similar use to a CV that you would send in for a job application. You promote yourself for why you would be good at the job, then you support that with your experience. It is also a great way to keep track of all concerts you have done and the ones to come. As well you can gather all of your photos and videos in one place to make access to them easier for potential employers.
My intended audience is predominantly for people who employ classical musicians and anyone seeking to employ a flute and piccolo player. The structure of my EPK is as follows: it begins with my name and a short biography, then as you scroll down there is a long biography next to a picture of myself, then there is a video gallery of some of my performances, then my experience is listed and my upcoming future performances, next is my reviews and testimonies and to finish my contact details and social media. By starting with my name big and clear it is obvious to the reader who the EPK is about. My short biography then allows for the reader to quickly decide whether I am the person they are looking for. This saves them from having to search through the whole website which would annoy them, making them less likely to employ me. Then if the reader likes my biography they would scroll down to my long biography which better describes my performance ability and experience. My biography is then supported with videos of me playing and a list of what I have previously performed in and concerts I have in the future. Next I have reviews and testimonies to allow the reader to have an alternative viewpoint to my own on my playing. Then to end my EPK I have my contact details and social media so the reader can easily contact me if I am who they are looking for. Another way my structure is effective is because each section is clearly titled correctly for the content that follows.
As I am at the beginning of my music career my EPK is not at the standard I eventually want it to be at. In the future I want to improve my EPK by getting a professional photographer to take pictures of me. I would ideally like some of me playing in ensembles, some solo performances and some of me and my flute. Currently my reviews and testimonies are from my friends and family. I would like to get reviews from professionals in the industry as they would hold more value. Over the next few years I would like to expand my experience as at the moment it is mostly conservatoire ensembles. A part of my EPK I am less certain of is the upcoming concerts section. In order for this part to be effective I will have to regularly update it otherwise it would look unprofessional. However this would force me to keep my EPK up to date. I would also like to create myself a professional email for my flute work so I never miss a flute related email amongested my personal emails.
To create a professional aesthetic for my EPK I went with the colour theme of black and white. This suggests “simplicity and elegance; perfect for the professional image it’s trying to portray” (Stewart, 2024). Another decision I made was which photos I should use. As I didn’t have any professional pictures I used ones taken by my family where I looked smart wearing concert blacks and was holding my flute. I also play piano and oboe but I chose not to include these in my EPK as there are not many jobs that would require you to play this combination of instruments. This is why I chose to just focus on flute as that is what jobs I want offers from. Another decision that was made to create a professional aesthetic was the naming of the flute trio I am in. We wanted a name that reflected us as friendly and approachable, but also professional. Our original name was Flute Friends, but we decided that this did not sound professional so we translated it into french to get Amis Flutistes . We chose French as we play lots of French repertoire.
Having both an EPK and an Instagram account dedicated to my flute is extremely useful. My Instagram account is a great way to spread the word and announce any concerts I am doing and where people can get tickets. Also on Instagram you can post about your practise techniques and other elements of flute playing that you wouldn’t see on stage. This is good for potential employers to see as you are showing them that you are putting in the work behind your performances in order to improve. By using Instagram you can show your followers who you are and your style of playing through what you post and if others like what they see they will follow you as well, creating a bigger interest in your account. Once people have found your Instagram account they can then go to your EPK where they will find out more about you in a written format. Also this is then more professional for employers to see and will have a better way of communicating to you (through email). Overall both Instagram and an EPK are beneficial, especially when combined as they support each other.
An EPK is useful for a classical musician as “it provides a snapshot of their band, talent, or project in a format that’s easy to digest and share – it’s a promotional package of digital material” (Straub, 2024). An EPK is great to send to employers as it will consist of everything that is a part of your musical journey and who you are as a musician. An EPK will be used by a musician as a CV for a job application. At the moment I would argue that my EPK is less effective as I am still training and developing my skills, so my EPK does not represent my full potential. However, in the future it will be of great use.
For my EPK I have parts that I like and parts that I dislike. I like the structure of my EPK, I think it is clear and easy to follow. As well I think I have all the correct elements. But I dislike what I have put into the structure. Both of my biographies need improving but I think these will be easier to improve when I have some proper reviews and testimonies that describe my playing technique and style. My videos and photos are not the best quality. My experience is very focused at Leeds Conservatoire so does not show a range. Although I dislike parts of my EPK I feel that they are limited due to me being at the beginning of my career so they will improve as time moves on.
In my EPK I have promoted my concerts. This could give me a revenue as people may see my concerts that are upcoming and buy tickets. At this stage the money of the tickets is not for me personally but for the orchestras I play in. But in the future this could be given to me as well. On other EPK’s they sell merch, people will then buy it, so merch will also drive a revenue from your EPK. (Williams, n.d.)
My EPK did not cost me anything but in the future I will spend money on it. For example I will pay for a photographer to take professional photos. Also in the future I may choose to publish my website on my EPK and to do that I will need to purchase the domain.
A legal issue I may run into in the future is with the photographs. “The person who creates an image (“the creator”) will generally be the first owner of the copyright.” (Intellectual Property Office, 2021). This means that I will need to sign a contract that passes the copyright of the photographs taken over to me, so I can use them as I please without any repercussions.
In my WITCI seminars we discussed what makes a good EPK. We decided that for structure and design it should be clear and easy to follow, with no illegible fonts and that the colour scheme does matter. I have used this to form my EPK as I used a simple structure that flows, easy fonts to read and a basic colour scheme of black and white. We also discussed what is the contents of an EPK, which is a short and long bio, photos, videos, experience, reviews, links to social media and contact information. I have used all of these in my EPK. (WITCI Seminar 12, 2025). One week we focused on the biographies, we decided that they need useful information about your style of playing and genre but what instruments your parents played was unnecessary. (WITCI Seminar 16, 2025) In a different seminar we spoke about what we were struggling with when creating our EPKs. Many, including myself, found writing positives about yourself in third person a challenge as it feels like bragging. But after speaking I realised that it is actually trying to sell yourself in the best possible way. We also spoke about where to focus our EPKs as most musicians have a portfolio career. We found that EPKs that involved everything were confusing and didn’t have a clear focus. So it was decided to focus on the biggest part of your portfolio career. (WITCI Seminar 20, 2025)
