24103614 Business Plan or Electronic Press Kit (SHR4C007R~002)

by

My business plan will be centred around freelance photography and videography services based in Leeds. I’ll focus on providing high-quality assets tailored for social media. Visual representation is key here; my background as an artist is where I can provide value.

The core idea is to create promotional assets for small businesses, music-related content for artists and working in events. Leeds has a strong music and club scene that can be targeted. There is a wide scope for potential clients because there is a growing demand for high-quality assets in the creative and social industries. My content must be visually engaging while aligning with my client’s brands.

I have existing experience in creating high-quality visuals through producing my own artist content with professional camera equipment. To further build out my portfolio, I will offer free and reduced prices. This will help to develop my photography skills as well as establish contact with potential clients.

The long-term aim is sustainable freelance income that utilises my videography skills and understanding of music culture. By creating content that enhances online presence, I can position myself as a relevant service provider for my clients.

My target market is small businesses, independent artists, and event organisers in Leeds. Small businesses in visually driven industries are reliant on high-quality visual content to market themselves on social media, including gyms, barbershops, and clothing brands. In these markets, visual representation heavily influences customer engagement. This would make professional assets a valuable investment for these companies.

Independent artists are my 2nd audience. There is demand for creative, high-quality social media content, such as mini music videos and behind-the-scenes content. This is where my experience creating content for myself becomes most relevant, as it is transferable to this use case. In addition to this, artists may also need professional photography for their EPKs. Filling these gaps for artists can help them appear polished to their audience and position themselves as professionals for industry opportunities.

Event organisers require consistent content to promote future events and increase engagement on social media platforms. My assets will allow businesses to display artist performances in addition to crowd energy at their events, helping to create a distinct brand and attract new event attendees. Many events in Leeds happen on a monthly or bi-weekly basis; establishing a strong client base here can create long-term working relationships.

Leeds has a very strong student population and also has a vibrant nightlife, creating the perfect environment for my business to flourish. A lot of students are aspiring creatives involved in music and other business endeavours, and will be eager to improve their visual content. Additionally, the student population has resulted in a bustling and vibrant nightlife. There are many club nights and music events to which I can offer my services.

The demand for photography and videography has increased within the creative industries, with a shift towards short-form platforms like TikTok and Instagram. These have transformed media consumption habits. Visually engaging content is paramount to growing a customer base now. This has led to organisations needing to produce high-quality content to compete for visibility and attention in online environments.

Companies have transitioned from occasional promotion to a more continuous approach to content. They are expected to regularly make contact with their audiences through the content they post. This industry shift has increased the demand for freelance videography and photography services, people who can consistently deliver high-quality assets. Independent artists and small businesses often can’t afford to hire high-budget in-house content teams. This would make them more reliant on small-scale service providers like myself.

Leed’s freelance videography and photography market is competitive. I found similar services ranging from independent creatives to established production companies. Smaller-scale service providers will be direct competitors to me, targeting the same audiences I do. The larger agencies, like LS Productions, will work with clients on professional budgets.

This separated market allows me to focus efforts purely on small-scale organisations, as I don’t have the resources to do otherwise; however, the accessibility of modern camera equipment and software could increase competition through market saturation.

My business will function as a small-scale freelance service, and my workflow will prioritise customer service and efficiency. To acquire customers, I will need a portfolio of my work, accessible on a website and social media.

The core of my equipment unit is based around my Sony a7III, which is capable of capturing both high-quality photos and videos. Other equipment/software that I already own includes tripods, a Neewar box light, a Zoom, a prime lens, camera batteries, SD Cards, hard drives, Davinci Resolve, Adobe Lightroom and Adobe Photoshop. After doing research, this is the majority of what I’ll need. However, it will be worthwhile for me to invest in a speedlight, these are industry standard for photographers in low-light environments.

The main time commitments will consist of client outreach, pre-production, shoot days and editing. During client outreach and communication, I must be readily available to respond to messages, as this is where we will discuss creative direction and the agreed-upon deliverables. Pre-production will include shoot planning, things like location, content styles and more. Shoot days and editing count as production and post-production, which are the things I have the most experience doing. Shoot days can range from 90 minutes to 2 and a half hours, depending on what I’m shooting and editing. 5 video assets don’t usually take over 2 and a half hours.

The exact number of hours this takes up will fluctuate depending on the number of clients, but I mustn’t take on more than I have capacity for, so I can effectively balance the business and my studies.

My marketing strategy is dependent on email outreach, portfolio strength and competitive pricing. Email outreach will be my primary form of client acquisition. I will look for small businesses and events that may be interested in visual content /photography, but do not yet have pictures on their website or Google Maps. If I contact a high volume of clients each day with a strong value proposition, I can secure opportunities in a more effective way than social media promotion.

This strategy requires a strong portfolio to assure clients that I am providing a high-quality service before they commit to paid work. I will build my portfolio in the early stages by doing small, unpaid/lower-cost projects. This will help build credibility but will also reduce the barrier for some first-time clients, establishing relationships that may lead to repeat business.

My business’s revenue will be directly linked to the fees I receive from my clients after projects. My pricing will vary depending on the scope of each job, with more demanding projects costing more. Photography and videography sessions for small businesses and artists can range from £50 – £100 and £100 – £300, respectively. However, in the early stages of my business, I plan to charge below these rates to undercut my competition. This will allow me to have a higher success rate during the client acquisition stage, as there is less assumed risk on their part. This strategy is only viable while I am a student and have less financial burden. For this service to be sustainable, I need to leverage my increased demand and transition to industry-competitive fees.

My startup costs will be minimal, as I already own/have consistent access to a lot of the essential equipment and software. However, I must consider other expenses such as transport and potential equipment maintenance. There will likely be unexpected costs along the journey, so I must put aside contingency money and avoid operating under a tight profit margin. It’s also important that I seek insurance for my camera, as doing more shoots raises the potential for equipment damage.

Within the first couple of months, revenue will fluctuate depending on the demand my service gets. My goal is to secure 2 paid photography jobs and 1 videography job within the first 6-week period. This could generate me between £150 and £200 for the period. Although the revenue is relatively low during this stage, building a client base is more important than the amount I charge for each session.

This section outlines the legal considerations required for the business to operate with full legal compliance; however, some of these requirements are not essential at a very small scale. They become important as the business grows, so its Improtant that I am aware of them now.

Once I reach £1000 trading allowance, I must register my business as self-employed with HMRC to pay income tax and national insurance accurately. After doing research, I have decided to use simple written agreements to outline payment terms, usage rights and other key conditions. I will make sure the language is concise and simple to avoid clients feeling intimidated. Since I’ll be handling my client’s private data, like email address, it’s important that I comply with GDPR to prevent any issues down the line.

Through this section, I will discuss how peer feedback, collaboration, & reflection helped to shape my business plan.

During the early stages of this assignment, my original business idea was centred around creating a subscription-based platform connected to my music career through services like Patreon. I was initially focused on offering supporters exclusive behind-the-scenes content for a more personal interaction with my audience. I believed this could help strengthen fan relationships while generating income independently as an artist. However, after receiving feedback from my peers in the workshop, I began to reflect more critically on the limitations of this idea. The main conclusion I drew was that viable subscription-based models for artists rely on having an already dedicated audience. Meaning that it could technically be possible, just that it would be slow at the beginning. The idea could be more strongly executed in the future when I am further along in my career.

I started doing content shoots with my peers, and it helped me consider the technical skills and resources that I already had available. After receiving encouragement from my friends and having discussions about freelancing, I recognised that my experience creating visual content for my own music could be applied as a business idea. The Patreon idea was quite niche and more reliant on audience loyalty; however, my current business plan would allow me to target multiple client groups and generate income sooner. The conclusion wasn’t that Patreon was a bad idea, just that it would be done better in the future.

Feedback also suggested that the original Patreon had a smaller scope and depended heavily on audience loyalty. It was limited to whatever my reach online was, whereas a freelance photography and videography business could target multiple client groups and generate income more immediately. This helped me begin considering other opportunities within the creative industries that aligned more realistically with my current position and skill set.

As a result of this feedback and collaboration, I decided to pivot my business plan into a freelance photography and videography business based in Leeds.

Overall, feedback and experiences I had with my peers added value to my business plan, as it encouraged me to consider more options that I may have previously been hesitant to try. It also showed me that it is okay to pivot ideas if things come up.
