Supportng Statement

My portfolio is comprised of 3 projects. The first 3 tracks are my band “City in Stereo”, a neo-soul band inspired by artists like Jungle and Don West. The tracks are nearing full completion, with a few extra parts and a final mix still needed. (See Document 1).

My approach to these tracks was to combine elements of funk and R&B from drummers like Nate Smith and Steve Jordan with a contemporary sound used by artists such as Anderson Paak. This is evident on the track “Turn it Off” (Track 2), where I used a Big Fat Snare Drum and 16″ crashes as hihats to create the drum sound.

In the fourth track, I am sessioning with the artist Lauren Emily. This track required a quiter dynamic and more texture filled supporting role, as we wanted the electric guitar and melody to be the main focus of the track. This led to the jazz inspired brush groove used.

The final track is a different example of my session playing with the artist Alana. This was a part which I had to come up with on the spot, and is an example of a more heavy and aggressive style of playing. This track shows an element of my playing I have been working on getting more comfortable with.
